As this is EvC, here's a kind of connection. One of the five "blurbs" on the inside of the front cover of my paperback copy of Richard Dawkins' "The God Delusion" quotes Pullman.
He says:

I hope the Archbishop has taken note of this.
Apparently the "dreaming spires" of Oxford disguise a nest of atheists.
