Er, not to poo-poo your excellent post, but this is not a valid conclusion to come to.
A story being passed down through the centuries doesn't indicate anything at all about it being factually true.
The reason to believe that something really happened is because there is evidence that it happened. You seem to want to believe that something in the bible happened until you are shown that there is no evidence that it did.
