OT, but what's the story on those? I saw the numerologist use one in the movie "Pi" but I didn't know what they are or what they're called, or why they're used.

The D&D Monster Manual refers to something of the same description as a "phylactery", but unless Orthodox Jews are undead spellcasters I don't see the connection.
