Re: Backers of ID get their foot in the door.
From the second (Enquirer) link:
quote:
"The reason this is being picked out for scientific questioning is not because it is more controversial than other science; it's because some people object to evolution for religious reasons," said the Rev. George Murphy, a Lutheran pastor from Akron and a former biology teacher.
"But this (lesson) encourages students not to take evolution seriously. I'm concerned about this, as a scientist and a theologian."
It seems to me, that the new law would permit into the classroom, statements such as the above. Rah Rah Rah!

Re: Backers of ID get their foot in the door.
Very nice essay.
They should use it as teaching material in Ohio.
I also think it is worthy of its own "Intellegent Design" forum topic. If you like that idea, go to the cited page for a "New Topic" button that will get things started in the correct forum.

It's trying to happen in Minnesota also
Didn't want to start another simular topic, so I plugged it in here.

Parts of above:
quote:
The Minnesota Department of Education's new social studies and science standards were approved by the Minnesota House on Thursday, but only after lawmakers amended the document to reflect the views of critics of evolution.
quote:
he future of the amended science standards and the much-debated social studies standards approved Thursday night by the House remains unclear. The Republican-controlled House conducted a five-hour debate on the issue while two floors below in a Capitol hearing room, the Senate Education Committee was listening to testimony on the issue. The Senate, where Democratic-Farmer-Laborites have the majority, has yet to take a vote on the topic.
quote:
The Minnesota Department of Education's original science standards were created by a citizen committee over six months and contained a full endorsement of evolution. That sparked a minority report from four members of the committee who sought to add language seeking to show "how scientists continue to critically analyze aspects of evolutionary theory."
See the cited for the complete article.
