Microsoft XBox One
vs
Sony PlayStation 4
Let the gaming wars begin!
I'm looking to get a PS4... but probably not for a year or so.
I'm not fascinated with any of the available games yet, so I have no problems waiting 'till things get all sorted out before making a purchase.
Anyone with any crazy loyalties?
My (totally uninformed) thoughts:
PS smartened up a bit and didn't overwhelm with too much power in their box this time. Game developers should pick it up quickly and the library should grow steadily. This is where the fun is.
MS is fighting a losing battle. I think this round will end up hitting them harder than they anticipated. Although the specs on each box is relatively the same... it doesn't really matter. MS's management of their console and gaming atmosphere is in a downward spiral. It's not too late for them to make a come-from-behind victory... but I think they're going to lose.

Yeah, PCs are much better for games.
I tend to spend most (if not all) of my video game time playing simultaneously with the wife, though.
I'm not even sure I can convince myself to get two gaming PCs... and then buy 2 of every game we want to play...
Although each having their own monitor would be much better.
Anyway, because of the simultaneous factor, we tend to use the PlayStation.
We'll probably get a PS4 whenever Borderlands 3 rolls around for it.

A next gen console would cost about 3/4 of a new gaming PC.
Not my gaming PC...
Do you think your wife might not like transitioning from a controller to mouse and keyboard? That's something to consider...
No, she has no problems with mouse and keyboard (she plays Sims 3 on PC when I'm not around).
There's just something more casual/personal to sharing a TV and sitting beside each other on the couch compared to having two PCs beside each other... each in our own chair focusing on different monitors...
I think the transition would work, but she's also "comfortable with the familiar."
It's also me... I feel like I would have to justify such a setup by putting in the game-playing time. Right now, I have a few too many other things going on (I'm working on becoming a Professional Engineer and some career stuffs). But maybe in a few years when things settle down.
There's lots of time, though. Video games are, in fact, my "retirement plan." Some people want to travel when they retire... I want to travel as much as possible while younger (and play sports 'n stuff 'til the exercise is too rough), then when I'm old and don't want to move... just play video games all the time
I really like Borderlands. Played it all the way through. I never played the second one, though I heard it was a good improvement.
They really cleaned up the "feel of the game" in the second one. It's awesome.
If you want to pick up ass-kicking guns while playing through the campaign... stick to Borderlands 1 (it's our favourite of the two).
If you like grinding specific bosses for the fancy weapons you want... Borderlands 2 is perfection.

The one thing that I didn't really like, was that right after I started getting the energy weapons, I got to the vault and beat the game. I didn't really get that much time to spend using the energy weapons.
You didn't miss much. I really wanted the energy weapons to be cool.. but they ended up being pretty weak compared to anything else you could get.
Playthrough 2 is fun, and the DLCs were pretty good too.

The Duopoly
Diomedes writes:
Now while they have backed away from most of those, my suspicion is that most of the code to turn those features back in is probably still in the operating system of the unit. So I would be worried that after buying one, Mr. Softie decides to 're-activate' those capabilities.
Yeah.
They should have done it like PlayStation did... put all those features in, just don't turn them on yet... but don't tell anyone about them either.
I'm just joking.
Or, at least, I have no knowledge of the actual PlayStation operating code.
It is obvious, though... that if one of these companies did such things it wouldn't make any sense at all. Instead of the marketplace flopping around between 50/50 or 60/40 in favour of each company at different times... it would jump to a 90/10 scenario and never change.
Those policies are shoot-yourself-in-the-foot-stupid to support by either company on their own.
But if both did it... then it starts to make a hell of a lot more sense.
Where's my tinfoil??!

Re: The Duopoly
Heh. Awesome. Stupid Microsoft.
But, really, this would just make the decision by Microsoft to be even stupider...
If you have a minor piece of the pie, and you would like to increase your market share... you don't go about it by being the only company deciding to take away choice and make things more expensive and difficult for the end user.
The only way that can make money for your company is if the one with the big piece of the pie does it too.
Oh yeah, grow tin foil hat... grow like a weed! A shiny, metal weed!!

Re: The Duopoly
Ultimately, most of that comes from a massive sense of hubris on the part of some of these decision makers. They become so engrossed in their own success, it gives them a massive god complex and a philosophy that they know better than everyone else.
I think this kind of thing exists in every industry.
I make that claim based off my sample size of 1 -> the manufacturing industry. Go-Go Gadget sample size of 1!
Regardless, my suspicion is that my ultimate decision on which console I buy will be predicated by which exclusive games I am most interested in.
A good, rational way to do it.
I'm buying a PS4 because I had a PS3.
I bought a PS3 because I had a PS2.
I had a PS2 because my girlfriend at the time (wife now) had one of those pink PS2 wireless controllers for girl-gamers and I wanted to impress her with my gaming skillz on the same system.
Go-Go Gadget irrational purchases of expensive hardware!!
To be honest, the game I am most looking forward to is Destiny, from Bungie, the guys that have us Halo in the first place.
I'm looking forward to multiplayer games that can be played together on the same console/TV.
Online multiplayer-only doesn't help me and my wife play together... we may as well get another PC and network-play that route.
I think things are starting to head down that direction (consoles getting away from two-player simultaneous action). But not yet, that fate will rest on the next-next-gen stuff, I think. I can see the possibility of one day all "more than one-player games" will be played via network connection (each player with their own TV/monitor). We'll see.
One other note: I am surprised neither console even made an attempt at backwards compatibility.
Yeah, that sucks.
Well, I suppose they both have it via streaming if you re-buy the older games on the streaming-network...
Hmmmm... both companies working together to take away choice and make things more difficult for the consumer... Go-Go Gadget Duopoloy Tinfoil! Now even higher!

The latest and greatest unknowns
Straggler writes:
Is this anecdotal evidence misleading? Or do sales figures etc. bear any of the above out?
Really, it's too early to tell. Those kinds of figures just aren't available at the moment. Right now, all we can go on is the vendor's media statements. Which, of course, are going to favour whichever vendor they come from.
This decent article on the Numbers Game sort of runs through all the lastest remarks.
My favourite part:
quote:
But given how relatively close both systems remain, however you spin those figures, this is all pretty much sturm und drang posturing for the sake of narrative momentum. If you want to know how things are going to shape up in the months to come, you’ll want to have a look at each console-maker’s software lineup. It’s what’s on tap in 2014 that’ll determine whether one system’s able to bolt ahead of the other.
So, as they say in my line of work: "Hurry up and wait."
The "internet vibe" in my not-all-that-connected-anyway-opinion (I read, like, 4 comments) is that PS4 is kicking ass in all areas. But I dunno.
And, some funny headlines from my rummaging around on the interworlds:
Despite rumors to the contrary, you can't make your Xbox One backwards compatible by entering in a series of button presses. You can, however, potentially brick your system
if you just like to watch the world burn, there is a mod that allows you to use your PlayStation 4 controller on Xbox One

Re: The latest and greatest unknowns
Mini Summary for those who do not like to click on links.
(From what I can tell):
MS = Microsoft = Xbox One
PS = PlayStation = PS4
  • both MS and PS have sold approximately 2 million systems
  • both companies are currently limited by production availability
  • MS sold "more" in the US... but they only sold to the US to start with where PS did a world-wide launch (MS's 2 million boxes were focused on the US where PS's 2 million boxes were more evenly distributed globally).
  • MS has a higher gross amount of money they are pulling in... but MS's system costs $100 more, so if sales are even-enough it's obvious that MS would be pulling in a higher gross amount
  • PS "sold more in November" (first month when both systems launched)... but PS did have a 9-day headstart on sales, so it's pretty obvious that they would have sold more in November.
  • both systems are working good-enough for the average user
  • both systems are having original-release issues and it's obvious that both will have significant software/firmware updates in the near future
  • in the US, MS is historically favoured (I think this is slight?)
  • in Europe, PS is historically favoured (I think this is more-than-slight?)
But still, at this point, only time will tell...

Latest News
PS4 outsells XBox One by 40% in 2013
2013 PS4 Sales: 4.2 million
2013 XBox One Sales: 3 million
Rumours:
-PS4 sold 2.1 million in first-few-weeks, and then another 2.1 million after that
-XBox One sold 2 million in first-few-weeks, and then another 1 million after that
-Therefore, XBox One sales are declining faster than PS4 sales
-XBox One was outsold even by Wii U (Nintendo's latest) during the last week before Christmas
-Wii U sales are not very impressive, therefore XBox One being outsold by Wii U is telling...
Go Playstation!!

Diomedes writes:
One thing to note is that folks who use Mr. Softie products often take a wait and see attitude before committing to new versions of things. Like waiting to upgrade to the latest Windows. I wonder if some of the lower sales are attributed to that. (I certainly adhere to that philosophy!)
Yes, definitely.
Only time will tell.
Actually, I'm taking this same approach, but for PlayStation (I do not own a PS4 yet, but plan on getting one in 6 months to a year or so...)
Also, the games that are being released next year will be another catalyst for sales.
For sure.
A gaming console is useless if there isn't any games for it. A lot will depend on the game selection.
Game selection depends on:
-the relationships created by Sony/Microsoft with their developers (copyrights, patents...)
-the will of developers to use the systems (new developers for new games will go with whatever system they think can best support their product... can they develop easily? ...will an audience purchase a game for that system? ...)
I am actually hoping both consoles do reasonable well, mostly because I want competition to exist. If one comes out way ahead of the pack, that doesn't always end up best for the consumer. (Sega anyone?)
Practical side of me must agree.
But the fun side says Microsoft can suck it!

Another Update
I think this is the most balanced, well informed article I found in my 0.53s Google search:
Advantage: PS4
Run down of a few new points:
  • PS4 has officially released selling numbers of 6 million units worldwide
  • Xbox One has not officially released any selling numbers for the last while...
  • Xbox One selling numbers are estimated to be 3.5 - 4 million units worldwide
  • PS4 is available (if you can find one...) in 45+ countries (47? 57?... can't remember...)
  • Xbox One is available (any electronics store near you...) in 13 countries
  • Xbox One does have a "big" exclusive game up for sale in the next week (Titanfall).
From what I can tell... PS is running away with it.
This isn't necessarily bad for Microsoft in a specific financial way. It's not like they're not covering their costs or not making money or anything... they're just getting out sold, that's all.
It's just fun to point out if you like PS and don't like Xbox (like me!)
Oh, and the wife and I have come to a financial decision.
We will be purchasing two PS4s along with an additional TV for the living room.
We plan on playing games online together... each with our own copy and own single-player screen.
We will start with Final Fantasy XIV.
We are teh nerds!! (And we also have no kids... )

True that.
Did you play FF11?
Nope. This is the first MMORPG I've ever played. Never even played WOW. Not even a 10 day free trial.
So, yeah... I'm a newb
Your job (class) has one role and the entire party relies on you doing it, and doing it well. Ya know, tank, healer, DPS.
Sounds good to me.
I'm getting there. Lots to learn.
I would recommend you and your wife do a tank/healer combo. DPSers are a dime a dozen.
We actually thought so too... before you mentioned this.
I'm planning on being a tank (can't start my character until we get our pre-ordered copy for the PS4... next month).
And she's setting up as a healer.
Let me know if you have any questions about FF14 or anything.
Just a very general question right now:
How do most people communicate? Headsets? Keyboard/Mouse chat?
We're not at the point where we even want to communicate with others yet. But I can see those days possible developing if we get into it.
As far as the game goes. It's pretty fun just learning how to do it as we crash our way through
