You need to keep in mind that US elections are a trial by ordeal. It is almost a year from the first primary to the general election, and there can be months of campaigning before that first primary.
At least you Brits have the good sense to keep it short.

In the US, what is most important is to avoid saying anything that could later be used as part of a character assassination campaign. With the shorter election season in the UK, hopefully that will be less of a concern.
