I sometimes see that on a Vista computer. It is typically caused by rebooting the router (either deliberately, or the router just decided to reboot).
If I unplug the ethernet cable, and leave it unplugged for a minute or two, then I often get a connection back when I restore the cable. I'm not sure that works every time. When trying that trick, I normally unplug the router end of the ethernet, since that is more easily accessible than the computer end. This did not happen with a previous computer. I am not sure if this behavior is due to hardware (presumably the ethernet card), or due to the change from XP to Vista. On my normal desktop, I see something similar with linux, if the NetworkManager software is managing the network. If I switch to using init scripts, I don't have similar problems.Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

I've noticed, especially on Vista/Win 7 platforms, a lot of network-related weirdness caused by the IPv6 drivers
Interesting. Thanks.Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

You forgot to mention which operating system you are using.
For linux, open a root shell and run/etc/init.d/network restart For a Mac, somebody else will have to answer. The "ipconfig" is for Window. For a really old Windows, it might instead be "winipcfg" (if I remember that far back). I didn't forget, I'm just too ashamed. Begins with a V ...
Vista is not as bad as some people make it out to be. I have Vista on my desktop, for when I boot to Windows. However, I rarely boot to Windows.Fundamentalism - the anti-American, anti-Christian branch of American Christianity

Presumably, that depends on what you are counting. So the only scientists that count who believe in ID are those in the biological sciences who have done post doctoral work? The theory of evolution is not a theology. It is, most importantly, a framework for research in biology. So, strictly speaking, only those who are using the theory that way are qualified to judge how well it serves that purpose. Personally, I am a mathematician and computer scientist. I find biology interesting, and I count myself as an evolutionist. But I am not doing biological research, so my view doesn't really count. If biologists find a better theory tomorrow, and start using that, then if I want to maintain my interest in what the biological researchers are doing, I would have to switch to the new theory.Jesus was a liberal hippie

That is total BS.As much as Linux claims to be about open-source, it's every bit as much about saying "no, sorry, you can't do that, because of our strong ideological commitment to a contradictory principle." There's no problem with running purchased commercial software on linux. Quite a few people do. Sure, there's stuff that doesn't work. But that's because vendors have decided not to provide it. If MS were to have a MS-Office version for linux, quite a few people would purchase it in preference to open-office/Libre-office. The only ideological commitment that prevents this, is Microsoft's ideological commitment to monopolism.Jesus was a liberal hippie

I've heard this called a pound sign plenty of times by Americans though, which raises another quick question! Where does that terminology come from?
I have no idea. But then I grew up in Australia, where "pound sign" meant the symbol you were looking for.Jesus was a liberal hippie
