The Sith Lord of Christian Radio
My wife and I live in Ontario, her family lives in Chicago, IL. When we visit, we drive through the Detroit, MI area. Which is the home of 103.5 - The Light, where Bob Dutko (the 't' is silent) delivers every day from 1pm-4pm.
We've nicknamed him everything from Count Duku to Bobby Douche-ko. His methods are (as you mention) very apalling.
The most underhanded is his selection of guests whom he debates about the Christianity with. To anyone generally listening, he's getting people involved in biology or evolution or any other arguement counter to his own. However, to anyone who specifically listens to the "guests" Bobby-Boy picks to be on his show... they're just stupid. My cat could win a debate against them.
Bob is so worried about his own shaky position, that he doesn't allow anyone with an IQ above a paperclip to come onto his show and attempt to discuss things with him. He's really funny to listen to
And yes, the show is littered with the following advertisements:
-Health supplements
-Things that help you poop better
-Marriage counselling
-Bible sales
-Donation begging
-Car maintenence (Quote - "Maybe God made your car break down so that you come to _______ to have it fixed!")
Bob Dutko himself even promotes each and every one of the advertisements.
My wife and I find it hilarious and we enjoy laughing at Bob, and feeling extreme pity for anyone who actually falls for agreeing with the show. It's 3 hours that are never missed on our 10 hour drive between our home and her family's home

Do people really take that guff seriously?
Yes. Poor souls...
If they do, how do they stay sane?
The art of shifting blame and responsibilities along with a dire need to be included in the "Christian Circle."
"God works in mysterious ways..."
"God only gives you what you can handle..."

Radio and Church
Woodsy writes:
I would like to know, however, if what goes on in fundamentalist churches is anything like what I hear on those radio stations. I very much hope that is not the case.
I think the spectrum is as diverse as it is on the radio.
Sure, on the radio we have quacks like Dutko and others mentioned here. But there are more mellow religious stations, I'm sure some can even be pretty good.
The same thing with churches. There certainly do exist (as Phat mentions) some churches that would make any sane individual double over in laughter. However, there are some churches that are very mellow as well.
There is a Southern Baptist church in my area where I've been lots of times when I was younger. The church is much more strict and "fundamental" in comparison to a Catholic church, but it still is very mellow in comparison to the tactics used by other extreme lunatics. I found the local Southern Baptist church to be very welcoming and endearing. They just put a larger emphasis on their interpretation of Biblical facts.
So, not all fundamental churches contain loonies. But yes, certainly some do.
