I seem to remember something about "mummies" found in Northern China (?) that date very far back and have red hair.
There was an article on them in Discover a few (5-ish?) years ago. They were old but nowhere near the Neanderthal/Homo sapiens timeline. They were buried with chariots and ornate fabrics. The surprise was that they were caucasians and that they were far outside of the area that they were thought to inhabit.
edited to add: they were mummified by the arid conditions not deliberate mummies like the egyptians.
