Question, Trixie:
Do your school(s) check for the lice in the schools and then send letters home if it is found in one or more students or do your schools depend on reportings from chemists? It wasn't clear from your post and my own experience as a child in Florida schools was that we got checked by our teachers periodically and were sent to the nurse and then home if we were found to have lice. I'm not sure if the parents got letters.
That doesn't really matter, though. It is simply curiosity.
My point in replying is to mention a method of getting rid of headlice that will probably not be as worrisome as the recommended treatment you mention.
Recently, my nephew had headlice repeatedly and everyone was wondering how he got it so often. We discovered that his best friend's mother had enrolled her family in a lice shampoo trial and the entire family was infected with lice (repeatedly) to test a new treatment and she failed to inform her son's friends' parents (until a couple of months ago).
Anyway, my mother (his grandmother) discovered that a treatment of olive oil works wonders. Of course, it is more time consuming than a chemical treatment, but it has worked so far (he got it 4 times in the last year before the friend's mother fessed up).
All you have to do it soak the hair with olive oil and wrap it in plastic wrap for about 2 hours. Then take off the plastic wrap and use a fine toothed comb to remove the now drowned lice and the eggs. Then wash with regular shampoo. As long as the kid uses a towel to sit back on furniture it's fine.
It also leaves the hair nice and shiny for a while
This is not clinically tested, I know, but it worked every time. No chemicals, easy and cheap.

You are anarchists in the realm of thought. And you are mad cosmos-makers. Each of you dwells in a cosmos of his own making, created out of his own fancies and desires. You do not know the real world in which you live, and your thinking has no place in the real world except in so far as it is phenomena of mental aberration." -The Iron Heel by Jack London
