It is amazing what the brain will do as it believes it is dying. Scientists were able to make a test subject have the same tunnel of light episode by stimulating the brain. As the brain lost vision it reduced to tunnel vision and amplified what light it could get in, end result was a description identical to near death experiences but without the actual death needing to occur.
The other thing that is interesting is that our brain will make us see and feel what ever we have told it should happen at time of death. For this reason you have Christians meeting God, Muslims meeting Allah, Hindus seeing Kali and every other belief as well. The near death experiences start similar but differ when it comes to what it proves to each individual. Each religious person who experiences it ends up believing they were right.
