Re: PTs do not work
A realistic value for viscosity at the core is probably at least several orders of magnitude higher than the geological community is prone to use in models (approaching viscosity of water at atmospheric pressure) in support of geodynamo theory.
Ah, but the measured viscosity of molten iron at the core-mantle boundary is 0.016 Pascal-seconds, 16 times the viscosity of water at room temperature. Calculations in this pdf have it as much as 20 times that at the inner-core boundary. Less than pudding, in other words.
Added by edit: is George's Majestic Lounge still by the tracks on Maple Street? And still as non-majestic as it was 35 years ago?

Re: PTs do not work
Perhaps someone here knows what current thinking is about the viscosity of the outer core.
About 16 centipoise at the top - see post 124 on this thread.
Much thinner than any pudding that I would willingly eat.....

Re: PTs do not work
It seems to be getting quite popular. Here is an independent reference for you......Nature, Vol. 392, 19 March 1998, pp. 272—275.
If you'll read that paper, HH, you'll find that it has absolutely NOTHING to say about galloping hydroplates. Zero. Not a fucking word.

Re: Marine magnetic anomalies
I went to order the book online but $147 is steeper than I expected. I may order it anyway.
The U of A had a pretty decent library 35 years ago, and likely still does. And they'll have interlibrary loan. It's right there on the hill....
