Mike, there is a spider that cannot normally breathe under water. If you would push it under water, it would drown. So it does not have "the morphological trait" of being able to breathe under water.
Yet, this spider spends most of its time under water. It even catches its prey there. How does it do this? It has built a diving bell which it fills with air it takes down from the surface. It has
produced an artificial means of living under water.
