Quite a while back, I posted this information at Percy's Yahoo site (Or somewhere in Yahooland). I think I might be fun to have it here:
This happened on an episode of "Politically Incorrect", hosted by Bill Mahr. I don't recall the topic of the show, or even if I personally viewed it but anyhow: One of the guests made the comment something along the lines of: "If Jesus Christ were to return to the Earth, He would be a communist". As I recall, the Christian fundimentalist on the panel really blew his top. So what do you think? Communism (Godless?) or capitalism (Godly?)? WWJD - What would Jesus Do? A few years ago the church of England had a poster campaign depicting JC as Che Guevera (or possibly the other way round)...

Well, this one seems pretty obvious to me....Jesus was not a communist but he certainly was no capitalist...(didn't he chase all the merchants from the temple with a whip?)...If anything,i believe that Jesus was a very wise socialist.

He did say sell all your possessions and give them to the poor... He would probably be a utopian socialist. Although in a communist government, it's hard to sell stuff. Hmmmm... But since he was just a guy and can't come back...

The campus chapel at the Universidad de Centroamerica in Managua has a 10 m long floor-to-ceiling mural of Daniel Ortega as Jesus ministering to the campesinos. (You have to understand Nica history to get the reference). Guess Jesus WAS a communist - and ugly to boot.

Messages 24 and 25 at this topic, at the "Social Darwinism" topic at Terry's Talk Origins. This link goes to the page containing the most recent messages. You may have to page up, if the topic grows more. Also see earlier messages for the greater context.
Moose writes: Terry, we seem to be of the same view on this little detail. My past experience is that many people coming from the political right and/or Christian fundimentalist perspective tend to view socialism and communism as nothing less than pure evil. My main points of reference are the two main people (whose names now escape me) at CreationWeb (If I recall the location correctly). I think socialism and communism are high moral idealism. Unfortunately, it is capitalism that appeals to mans base instincts ("what's in it for me?"), rather than the more noble "what is best for society in general". Bill Mahar quoted Fidel Castro, who said something along the lines of "If Jesus Christ were on earth today, he would be a communist". I agree with Fidel on this. Terry writes: Absolutely, Moose. I note that the early church was communist, as they had all things in common, according to the book of Acts. I expect the government set up by Jesus Christ will follow this pattern, it will indeed be "from each acording to his abilities, and to each according to his needs." Such an adealistic system is truly the best - until fallen man becomes involved, at which time it is perverted into "from each as little as he can get away with, and to each as much as he can grab." In our present fallen state, capitalism with restrictions seems to be the best possible form of government, appealing to our self interest while maintaining some inforced altruism. Moose

Note the fact that the counter-argument offered by christians is based wholly on their presumed mythology of the origins of the world and man. That is, they are not arguments to reality, but arguments to a narative perception of reality. Similarly, capitalist property rights are also based on the gift of the world by god to man.

quote: it wouldn't suprise me. jesus seemed to be about unifying and serving others for the greater good. communism is not strictly godless. marx was against religion, yes. so marxist communism tends to preclude religion. but i would say that communism stands a better chance of being "godly" than capitalism does. capitalism is about the pursuit of capital -- profit. and jesus said a number of things about how hard it is for rich people to be godly. there's also a nice quote by mussolini:

I think that Jesus could wind up anywhere! Personally, He could return in the Islamic world...THAT would shake up the religious establishment as much as it did the first time. The book of Acts shows a system more akin to godly communism. The element of it that I use to justify being a Capitalist is that nobody can trust any Apostles these days to lay the money down in front of. If Jesus returned, however, it would not be as the suffering Messiah as was the first time. The second time He supposedly returns as the conquering Messiah.

I used to be a proud member of the religious right. I do blame my present communist beliefs on actually reading the Gospels.
So, I pretty much agree with the comment. (Although, if the quote did originate with Fidel Castro, I'm not sure Jesus would agree with Castro's version of "communism".)

I don't want to spin this topic into semantics, but can someone explain to me the difference between socialism and communism?
I've always defined both as a political theory in which the government controls the major industries and economy. I've heard people describe socialism as the state between capitalism and communism. Also, does socialism and communism necessarily entail fixed wages? This message has been edited by JustinCy, 10-04-2004 05:13 PM
