Bernie Sanders -- because he is a social democrat
Democratic socialism is not full blown socialism, but a combination of capitalism with social limits, a social conscience if you will to rein in the extreme sociopathy of unregulated capitalism -- and this has been a part of American democracy since FDR.
Certainly we had a lesson in the sociopathy of unregulated capitalism with the great crash and following depression, and again with the mortgage crash and following recession. It took democratic policies to pull out of the depression. It took democratic policies to pull out of the recession (even hampered by republican obstructionism).
Bernie Sanders follows FDR in pursuing universal single payer health care via expanded medicare.
Bernie Sanders follows FDR in pursuing programs to help the common workers -- $15/hr minimum wage versus "a chicken in every pot"
Bernie Sanders is getting increasing support from many disillusioned republicans who (a) think the GOP has gone insane and (b) like his policies for working people. This means he may have bi-partisan support, especially from the Rand Paul anti fed side (see new policy to audit the fed annually and to de-link it from the big banks).
His record speaks loud and clear, and consistent -- unlike any other candidate.
Hillary has too much baggage and way too much pre-installed hatred in the GOP base to be effective, she would follow Obama in being obstructed at every step by the GOP congress. Certainly she will have a divided congress to deal with just like Obama, with nothing to entice bipartisan support, even though she is a DINO imho.
Trump is a pompous blowhard loudmouthed egotist who appeals to the most base emotions of the GOP base.
Trump supporters say they like him because he speaks his mind and he doesn't pander to anyone. If that is true then they should like Bernie Sanders too.
On policies (what you can find on them) there are no significant differences between any of the republican candidates, with the possible exception of Rand Paul (who is more of a libertarian and won't get significant GOP support and would be unelectable), they are all pro-corporate anti worker misogynist warmongers.
A Bernie Saunders / Rand Paul ticket would be interesting ...
BUT *** the overriding issues that we face are:
  • global climate change -- Bernie is the only viable candidate to address this -- has already caused the Syrian civil war and assisted the rise of ISIS (combined with the reaction to Schrubbias invasions and drone bombings),
  • the next Supreme Court Justice can change the balance of the court -- one more GOP appointment and you can say goodbye to Roe v Wade and civil rights and say hello to expanded Citizens United \ Hobby Lobby corporate and religious pandering over people, and an expanded militarized police state,
  • dealing with the (corporate) media hyped fear campaign where appeals to xenophobia and emotion outweigh and overwhelm rational analysis -- the next GOP president will lead us into another war in the middle east and expand the police state "Homeland Security" ... all in the name of making the US "more secure" ("we have to attack them there so they can't attack us here")
Those last two reasons are why I will vote for Hillary if she wins the democratic race against Bernie. Certainly she is the only candidate with massive foreign policy experience and knowledge, and her positions on women's rights and health-care are worth supporting.
There is too much at stake to not vote.
Enjoy
if you can

Re: Hillary? Ack!
So you're stating that you prefer an experienced candidate who was COMPLETELY supportive for Bush Jr.'s illegal and immoral invasion of Iraq? You WANT a candidate that thinks and acts, EXACTLY like . . . Bush Jr.?
Hillary has baggage and is an opportunist agreed.
But that doesn't change the fact that she knows who we are dealing with and has the best handle on what they want. Politics is the art of compromise so that both participants leave with something (as opposed to the GOP hostage taking tactics).
Any of the current GOP candidates would be live canons ready to start a war over the slightest excuse.
So if it comes down to choosing Hillary or a warmonger GOP I'll hold my nose and vote for Hillary.
Because Supreme Court Justices -- 2 or 3 could be appointed by the next president, and one more activist radical GOP appointment could cause decades of progress to be washed away in a single trumped up case (like Hobby Lobby and Citizens United).
Curious, while you would reward and vote this type of person into office, I would support her criminal actions be put on trial.
Standard GOP Faux Noise Nutwerk echo chamber propaganda. You want to put someone on trial for criminal actions start with Schrubbia and Big Dick Cheney, and then we can talk about who else rises to that level.

Re: Voting against not for
Welcome to the fray, 14174dm,
You would think that we would be the stalwart base of the Republicans - white, middle age, middle class, middle Americans with college educations, frequently own or work for small businesses.
Curiously I have to wonder why you would stick with the republican party when all they do is take your votes and then pander to the very rich and ignore you.
I think the politicians don't realize one thing that occurs to many small business people - NO WAY would I hire the majority of politicians. Too focused on themselves, making promises they know they can't keep, thinking that short term wins on petty issues is leadership.
Perhaps if you made a list of what you want from government and then see which party comes closer to those needs (in deeds not just in sound-bites), you might find that the new GOP just doesn't truly share your values and it is time for a change.
Look at Bernie Sanders with honest evaluation of his positions on the issues, not with knee-jerk reaction to the word "socialist" but with understanding that each person is entitled to a fair share of the profits of a company, that health care is not something that should be arbitrated by corporations but a universal right.
The democrats today are basically the republicans of my youth -- Obama is to the right or Reagan.
Personally I would like to see a more social equality platform as it is a strong middle class that really allows small businesses to thrive and the actions of the GOP have been to strangle the middle class.

Re: Voting against not for
It seems to me that to the Republicans and Tea Partiers, being conservative means keeping those currently having power & money in power & money.
And the "DINO" democrats that are the right of Reagan now. The only one I see bucking that trend is Bernie Sanders -- he is for the common working man and refuses campaign contributions from big money, raising all his campaign funds from common people.
A strong working class and a strong middle class is built on respect for workers and honest wages. Minimum wages, paid overtime, and benefits may seem like a lot to a small business, but it is the only way you will have people with the money to spend on your business. Henry Ford knew it and paid his workers enough to be able to buy cars.
In Donald Trump we see the results of years of people in the Faux Noise Nutwerk echo chamber telling us to hate government, hate people that are "taking your jobs" hate immigrants and hate "lazy" workers or people on food stamps (most of which work at poverty wages at places like Walmart where you are trained in how to get the most government benefits). You distill that cool-aid and you get Trump supporters.

Re: Hillary? Ack! But still better than ANY republican
So what you are saying is: if you cannot have the SPECIFIC ORDER of arrests that YOU mandate, you would prefer ALL mass-murderers to stay free. ...
Curious habit you have of arguing against straw man arguments.
No, what I am saying is that Cheney and Schrubbia invaded sovereign nations on trumped up lies and misinformation, that they pushed torture on captives that were rounded up willy-nilly for finder's fees and massively overstepped their bounds given by the Constitution, international treaties and international laws.
And I think what they did stands head and shoulders above anything Hillary has been accused of even if it were true, which has not been established to my knowledge in anything like the degree of knowledge we have about Bush/Cheney.
What Hillary stands accused of -- purely by partisan politics -- are trumped up innuendos and misrepresentation of facts -- or are you deluded enough think Bengazi was anything real? Especially when the GOP cut funding for defending such compounds, and especially when you compare similar occurrences under Bush\Cheney that did not raise a peep from the GOP or anyone in government.
She made her decision on Iraq based on the misinformation supplied by the Bush\Cheney warmachine, who were looking for any excuse to trump support to invade oil lands.
But hey, if you really think she is a criminal then list the crimes and provide the evidence that they are real and not propaganda.
Or step away from the kool-aid.
Enjoy

I really think Sanders will win this one (though minority voters, especially blacks, will have a hard time voting for a white MALE Jewish "socialist"). I never thought he would be this strong in January.
When he wins New Hampshire and Iowa, people will start paying more attention, and the media will be forced to acknowledge the existence of his campaign.

Re: Get ready
I say let's go for a lottery. Look how popular the last Powerball was!
Well I have argued that this is the best way to select the house of representative members, ... you know - the one's who are most supposed to represent the people rather than the state or the nation (or party or corporations).
Set the total at 450 members and draw names from citizens that file income tax returns, with 150 chosen every year for a 3 year stint.

Democrate Debate before 1st Primary
The polls have it neck and neck for Bernie & Hillary, with O'Malley doing better that the majority of the republican field.
The last debate before the primaries in New Hampshire & Iowa can be watched on:
Personally I would be happy with any one of the three, but I support Bernie's programs for the working people.
I just found out that signatures were needed to get Bernie on the RI ballot, and am surprised that this has not already been done. I will be doing that at a signing event on thursday. You may want to check the status in your state.

Re: Hillary? Ack! But still better than ANY republican
Sayth the man who just accused me of believing the Bengazi "controversy" as evidence of my Kool-Aid imbibery.
Amusing counter attack, dronestar ... however I let my actual words (not your straw man) that I actually posted defend me:
Message 49: What Hillary stands accused of -- purely by partisan politics -- are trumped up innuendos and misrepresentation of facts -- or are you deluded enough think Bengazi was anything real? ...
But hey, if you really think she is a criminal then list the crimes and provide the evidence that they are real and not propaganda.
Or step away from the kool-aid.
Note that I did not accuse you, but asked you a question, and followed it with a request for information on actual crimes.
You mean . . . again?
No I mean a first time, an actual listing of actual crimes and backed by actual evidence supporting that they are actual crimes and not propaganda.
You dodged by the weak counter attack above.
Okay. To limit YOUR off-topic straw-man accusations, please first answer Question One: Was the american invasion of Iraq a war crime?
Seeing as it was made "legal" (if any invasion of another country when not at war can be considered "legal") by coercing votes from congress and the UN with falsified information, a drummed up atmosphere of fear, and a rush to convict Iraq of having weapons of mass destruction before the real evidence was obtained from the UN inspectors, the answer is yes* ... funny how not one shred of the purported "evidence" panned out in fact (lies and misinformation have a habit of disappearing, don't they?).
But the war crimes involved were the torture of prisoners. As a result there are countries where Schrubia and Cheney do not travel to as they would be arrested and tried on actual charges filed against them.
The Schrubbia/Cheney fiasco in the middle east first bulked up the numbers of terrorists and then allowed them to coalesce into ISIS. Because they had no idea of what they were doing, and were focused solely on getting oil, protecting the oil fields more than the museums and cultural treasures or the actual people of Iraq.
Enjoy
Where the * denotes deluding congress and the UN using false information in order to get approval.
