Re: Xbox One owner
There are glitches in both systems, so early adopters beware. If you want a nearly pain free system wait for about 6 months
I am waiting a year, just to be safe. Will enjoy my XBox360 up til then.
Another reason for waiting is I want to see how well new games for both consoles are being received by gamers. I myself am a huge fan of Halo, but even for me, the franchise is getting somewhat stale. If Halo 5 coming out next year gets rave reviews, that may be enough to warrant the purchase of an Xbox One. I am also curious to see how good Titanfall is.
Otherwise, most other games that peak my interest are available on both consoles.

Re: Xbox One owner
Waiting a year will definitely save you money, and there should be a strong roster of games for both consoles at that point. I would fully expect that there will be strong exclusives for both consoles, so it really comes down to which ones interest you the most. Then all you have to do is wait for the end of that console generation, by the other console, and then play all of the exclusives you felt you were missing out on.
Rabid fanboyism aside, both are really good consoles if you are into console gaming.
Even as an XBox360 owner, I am still quite irked about all that asinine nonsense Microsoft tried to peddle during their rollout. No used games, always connected to the internet, mandatory Kinect, etc.
Now while they have backed away from most of those, my suspicion is that most of the code to turn those features back in is probably still in the operating system of the unit. So I would be worried that after buying one, Mr. Softie decides to 're-activate' those capabilities. Maybe I am just being paranoid, but Microsoft so thoroughly screwed the pooch with this rollout, I wouldn't put it past their idiotic marketing department to try to peddle that nonsense again after they have gained critical mass.

Re: The Duopoly
It is obvious, though... that if one of these companies did such things it wouldn't make any sense at all. Instead of the marketplace flopping around between 50/50 or 60/40 in favour of each company at different times... it would jump to a 90/10 scenario and never change.
Those policies are shoot-yourself-in-the-foot-stupid to support by either company on their own.
But if both did it... then it starts to make a hell of a lot more sense.
The fact remains that Microsoft did attempt to push these features forward. So despite the obvious stupidity of the choice, it did not deter them from trying.
Perhaps I am being too cynical, but I work in the tech industry and I am still amazed by some of the asinine decisions I have seen made by business leaders or some overzealous crazies in the marketing or sales department. Ultimately, most of that comes from a massive sense of hubris on the part of some of these decision makers. They become so engrossed in their own success, it gives them a massive god complex and a philosophy that they know better than everyone else.
As a sidebar, its funny what you stated from a conspiracy standpoint. One of the running themes on the gamer forums is that Sony and Microsoft actually DID agree to those types of restrictions but Sony reneged on the deal to make Microsoft look stupid. Pretty far fetched in my opinion, but it doesn't stop people from pushing forth the theory.
Regardless, my suspicion is that my ultimate decision on which console I buy will be predicated by which exclusive games I am most interested in. I do love Halo, but that in an of itself isn't enough at this stage. If Titanfall makes waves, I may be swayed in XBox's direction.
To be honest, the game I am most looking forward to is Destiny, from Bungie, the guys that have us Halo in the first place.
One other note: I am surprised neither console even made an attempt at backwards compatibility. Perhaps they felt their fan base was already such that it was not deemed necessary.

Re: The Duopoly
And that is why I'm not buying a next gen system until my 360 craps out and I can't find a replacement anywhere.
I am actually thinking of buying another XBox360 once they start a firesale to offload the inventory in favor of the XBoxOne. That way I have two in case I get a red ring of death on my existing one, which is five years old.
And for the record, my first XBox 360 did succumb to the dreaded red ring of death in its second year. :-(

Re: The Duopoly
I'm lucky, my Xbox is about 6 years old (I got it when arkham asylum came out) and it's still doing ok
One of my all time favorite games of the past ten years by the way. :-)
I also played Arkham City and Arkham Origins. They were good but its hard to top the first one.
Hey, any Dead Space fans out there?

Current Sales
I just saw this article on Huffpost:
Xbox One Sales Top 2 Million Units Globally | HuffPost Impact
XBox One just surpassed two million units sold, nearly catching up to Sony selling 2.1 million units. Although it took XBox longer to reach a similar milestone. That can be attributed to slower turnaround time or a difference in desirability. But clearly, both are in very high demand.

Console Availability
Just a little sidebar observation on my part:
I happened to stop into the local Toys R Us, Best Buy, Target and Walmart that are near where I live. I curiously was looking at that areas where the new consoles are being displayed.
What was interesting is that I found Xbox One consoles at Best Buy and Target that were in stock. However, at every single store, not one PS4 was available.
Now I realize this is just a local example, but I did find it interesting. I don't know if there is a general demand bias towards the PS4 or if production is merely out of sync right now.

Re: Latest News
2013 PS4 Sales: 4.2 million
2013 XBox One Sales: 3 million
Yes, I read that too.
Very interesting. I am wondering how things will play out next year. One thing to note is that folks who use Mr. Softie products often take a wait and see attitude before committing to new versions of things. Like waiting to upgrade to the latest Windows. I wonder if some of the lower sales are attributed to that. (I certainly adhere to that philosophy!)
Also, the games that are being released next year will be another catalyst for sales. Right now, PS4 has Killzone as an exclusive title, which is probably helping demand. XBoxOne doesn't have as good a selection, but there are some exclusive titles coming out next year like Halo 5 and Titanfall.
I am actually hoping both consoles do reasonable well, mostly because I want competition to exist. If one comes out way ahead of the pack, that doesn't always end up best for the consumer. (Sega anyone?)

Re: Another Update
Xbox One does have a "big" exclusive game up for sale in the next week (Titanfall).
I don't think this will help as much as most people think. Many have just realized that Titanfall is only a multiplayer game. Contains no single player campaign. So despite the fact that it has good press, I think that will turn off many gamers from shelling out $60 bucks for it. (Myself included)
From what I can tell... PS is running away with it.
I noticed this when I visited local stores and saw that PS4s seemed to always be sold out while XBox Ones were available. Although now, both seem to be in inventory.
I am curious is Halo 5 will help boost sales. I myself am a huge fan of the franchise, but I am not sure if that will be enough to sway me one way or another.

Re: Another Update
I have to know: Is your mother having as much sex with the fanbase as mine apparently is?
The only games my mother plays are bridge and Canasta on her Kindle Fire.
For the ultimate sin, I bought Mass Effect 3 to play the multiplayer with some friends who already had it, and I haven't played any of the single player on that game either. I know, that's terrible. But we're out here.
I am one of those unusual gamers that actually doesn't like multiplayer and prefers the story driven campaigns. Guess I am too old school....
