If you're talking about the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981, I remember it, too. If your tax bill doubled it wasn't because of this bill. It isn't that hard to criticize Reagan for things he actually did do, there's no need to make stuff up. --Percy

Percy writes: I can't see any specific reason to vote against Romney, unless one finds his lack of specificity and his duplicitous chameleon like nature to be a reason. Just for starters, one might begin with his stance on preemptive war, torture, reproductive rights, healthcare reform/access, and further tax breaks for the hyper-wealthy. And yes, one could add his lies and his refusal to reveal his actual plans."If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you can collect a lot of heads."

foreveryoung writes: Why are you calling Petroleum Geologists and Environmental Geologists Engineers? As a person with a degree in geological engineering, I have no idea why you think anyone working in the field would confuse petroleum or environmental geologists with petroleum or environmental engineers. In general, one deals with evidence for hypotheses to formulate theories, the other ultimately uses those hypotheses and theories (along with some short cuts and rules of thumb) to design new methods or facilities to maximize profit. Everything Coragyps said is dead-on fact. I know as we are both in the Permian Basin, which to my knowledge is once again the largest oil producing field in the USA. Try renting, my daughter can't rent a cardboard box in Odessa for less than $100 a day. Also, why would you think anything is somehow preventing you from becoming a petroleum engineer? Tuition at my Alma Mater, New Mexico Tech, was $2500 a year in-state and $7500 a year out-of-state just last year -- compare that to Ivy League. They have a doctorate program in petroleum engineering as well as geology, geophysics, geochemistry and hydrology. {ABE - and environmental engineering, should you prefer more stability in possible future demand}. I recently read an article that stated due to the shortage, petroleum engineers with a few year's experience working offshore in Australia were pulling 500k a year. Timed right, seems a degree would be a good investment. Timed wrong, as in my case back in 1982, you get to be a soldier, journalist, librarian, then college dean. Considering the momentary high demand which could last awhile, I think the only thing preventing you from becoming a petroleum engineer is you. Well, I guess if you want to be picky, sure. I don't understand how this race could be so close. Even for someone who happens to agree with Romney philosophically, how could they vote for a candidate who so obviously just says whatever he thinks an audience wants to hear with no specifics. His stump speech now is "Big Change" and "More Jobs", but he never says how he's going to do this. He says he's going to cut taxes, increase defense spending and balance the budget as if nobody can do math. I guess this is more a comment about the electorate. --Percy

It really is simple.
That is all the current GOP want and all the current GOP expects a President to be. They believe that Congress should run the country and that the President is only there to sign the bills Congress sends for signature. The duty of a President is to say what he is told to say, sign what he is told to sign, get out of the way of business and the official religion and should the wrong bills somehow get through and appear on his desk he is called simply not implement those satanic parts that were included.Anyone so limited that they can only spell a word one way is severely handicapped!

I am not making anything up. And it wasn't in 1981 that I'm talking about, but rather a few years later. When I did my taxes, I compared it with the previous year. No big changes in salary nor in expenses, deductions, etc. But my taxes literally doubled! The other thing I remember about that tax year was that tax rates for the top tier, those making over $150,000 (as I recall the cut-off), had been reduced drastically. I'm not making anything up here. That really did happen.

I am not the one confusing the terms. I was talking about environmental geology an petroleum geology. Coragyps responds by talking about environmental engineering and geological engineering. Why are you correcting me when it is coragyps who said something other than what I said? I said it wasn't likely that I would be able to gain employment as a petroleum geologist. Why did coragyps respond with talk about petroleum engineering. I am getting a bachelors degree in geology, not geological engineering.

Why did coragyps respond with talk about petroleum engineering. I am getting a bachelors degree in geology, not geological engineering. Because that was what you said.

What we get a degree in does not restrict us to just that specific position, but rather for a number of jobs. One of my degrees is in computer science, but I work as a software engineer which is one of the jobs that my degree qualifies me for -- in my first job, I was the only programmer with a computer science degree; one programmer had a master's in marine biology.
A friend a couple decades ago had a PhD Chemistry, but he worked as a chemical engineer. And according to Dilbert, an English degree qualifies you to spend all day walking through the engineering offices waving your arms in order to keep the motion-sensor-controlled lighting on (I worked in such an office, but we had to wave our own arms when the lights would suddenly go out). Just because the word "engineering" is not in your degree's name does not mean that you wouldn't end up working as a geological engineer.

I didn't realize I said that then. I guess you have never said one word when you meant another huh? liar. This is why you and many others here are such jerks. Yes, I know what I am studying. Why would you assume that I didn't just because I mistakenly said the wrong word?

I am not wrong about everything. I just don't agree with anything you say or believe in and that is just fine with me. If I am wrong about everything from your perspective then I must be doing something right. The minute I was correct in your estimation is the day I would put a end to my days on this earth.
