Congressman Broun sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.
quote:
ATHENS, Ga. Georgia Rep. Paul Broun said in videotaped remarks that evolution, embryology and the Big Bang theory are "lies straight from the pit of hell" meant to convince people that they do not need a savior.
"God’s word is true," Broun said, according to a video posted on the church’s website. "I’ve come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and Big Bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of hell. And it’s lies to try to keep me and all the folks who are taught that from understanding that they need a savior."
Broun also said that he believes the Earth is about 9,000 years old and that it was made in six days.

He should sit on the "Say something stupid for Christ" committee.

I don't understand how people like this guy and Todd Akin can get on government science committees.
How do they get these jobs handed to them, what is the vetting procedure?

The above ontological example models the zero premise to BB theory. It does so by applying the relative uniformity assumption that the alleged zero event eventually ontologically progressed from the compressed alleged sub-microscopic chaos to bloom/expand into all of the present observable order, more than it models the Biblical record evidence for the existence of Jehovah, the maximal Biblical god designer.

The explain to them any scientific investigation that explains the existence of things qualifies as science and as an explanation

Does he really believe that?
I have to wonder if the guy actually believes this or if he is just appealing to the majority of voters. The fact that this sort of nonsense appeals to the majority of voters is depressing. I find it hard to believe that these people actually believe this stuff. I know plenty of rational people who all of a sudden become irrational when it comes to god and religion. How do they keep the rationality of the rest of their lives from washing away the irrationality of their religious beliefs?
Penn Jillett has a great rant on the subject.

Yes, that was good.
When I hear, say on the news, "70% of people believe X", I sometime mumble to myself "they believe X when asked." There is an awful lot of social pressure, and a huge tendency for people to bow to that social pressure in what they say.

Representative Broun has no immediate need to appeal to voters. He is not facing any opposition from Democrats, and he won the Republican primary back in July. As someone has pointed out, Broun is an MD. Not many people would have bothered or had the knowledge to include a denunciation of embryology in their anti-evolution rant rant.
Most people probably think and hope that that the doctors they visit are scientists. When a fundy goes to the doctor for treatment instead of to Wednesday night Bible study, hasn't the fundy already made the call that he wants secular science to be applied to his condition?

On any kind of science committee, the committee chair, if he is a republican, asks "do you believe in the big bang or evolution?". If the answer is NO, they are on the committee. Simple.
Sometimes there are further questions, like "do you believe life begins at ejaculation?", but generally it is understood that if you are a republican in congress, you already believe that.

Reflect the electorate
Some stats on how Democrats and Republicans view the theory of evolution
Republicans, Democrats Differ on Creationism
Sixty percent of Republicans are Creationists of the Broun strip.

That is a crazy high percentage. In the UK it is 17%

Re: Reflect the electorate
A truly sad state of affairs!
And then the stupidest members of each group get elected to congress.
What a crappy system we've ended up with.
