Re: Where do we Take it from Here?
Only problem I can see is the evaporation of our pensions....somebody in some country/culture will be left holding the bag! Any better solutions??
We could all help hold the bag together. Is there a reason that won't work?

Re: Where do we Take it from Here?
Ahhh yes...John Lennon and Imagine...except that I don't optimistically believe that everyone will share the global debt equally.
Does that answer the question I asked at all?
Even the US Debt is, I think, a global concern and I would like to see it negotiated away based on some sort of global plan.
So you want to make sure that it is them left holding the bag instead of us, even though we're the ones who made it so gosh dern heavy.
The shift away from consumerism is idealistic yet obviously not seen as practical by the powers that be.
It's not idealistic. You are the one who linked me to that video which made the point that for most of human history consumerism was not the standard.
Thus, to see any change, the powers that be need to surrender some of the power to the rest of us.
We are more in number. We always have more power. We always have. We always will.

Re: Phat's Solution
hey, the topic is about reducing consumerism...not stepping aside and letting Thailand and every other third world country become consumers also.
I see. Bombs away is your fix for consumerism. In that case, we better start implementation in the places where consumerism is most rampant. We'll point the first ones at your house.
Im simply one of many aging US middle class who will try everything short of war to retire with grace and dignity after a lifetime of work.
Short of war, but apparently not short of military use. Funny thing is: people being bombed and shot at can't tell the difference, nor do they much care.
These other countries cant do what we did. We already used up most of the resources and if they try and copy our pattern, the planet itself will be in danger.
The planet is already in danger. It's time for everyone to cut back.

Re: Consume less but let everyone work together
We need to work with the other countries rather than compete with them.
So what might be some of the things we can all do together?

Re: Consume less but let everyone work together
In other words, we need educated immigrants to serve our aging population.
Make them our servants? That's your solution?
How is that working together? That's just more of the U.S. raping the third world.
