2,500 years and counting
Is philosophy a load of navel gazing pompous pointless nonsense?
For the most part, yes.
The few contributions we have from philosophy (logic, etc.) could just as easily have come from other fields as needed.
To scientists, the majority of philosophy now seems to be, "But you have to pay attention to us! We were here first! (Whimper. Snivel.)"
Just look at post-modernism and related nonsense for examples of modern philosophy.
No wonder most scientists couldn't care less.
(Flame suit on, but only set to moderate.)

Re: Empiricism.....?
But the exact mixture and how or why this mixture is as successful as it is remains a philosophical question.
And philosophers will probably debate the issue for the next 2,500 years without 1) coming to any conclusions, 2) changing the way science works, or 3) realizing how little use they are to the real world.
As long as they stay out of the way of those who are doing productive things they can rub blue mud in their navels on alternate Thursdays for all most scientists care.

Philosophy and other nonsense...
The above series of posts are why many, of not most, scientists pay no attention to philosophy or philosophers.
And I think it has been for the better.
You can only chase your tail around in circles for so long before you get tired of the whole thing.

Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge.
