Words incorrectly spelled is either a sign of mental illness or personal carelessness. A slob by any other word, spells carelessly and dresses with equal abandon. Poetically said but it just might come back and bite you up the arse one day.

In a review of the book The Survival of English by Ian Robinson, B. R. Myers in the April issue of The Atlantic writes:
B. R. Myers writes: People who cannot distinguish between good and bad language are unlikely to think carefully about anything else. --Percy

quote: Well, I do have a tape-recorder memory, but it's more that I am too familiar with words that when they are jumbled up, I start to find anagrams and if you force me to descramble the word, I won't necessarily come up with the one you meant. Ever play Word Whomp? Or Jumble? Or Scrabble? I used to have a subscription to Games magazine for the longest time. There was a substitute teacher when I was in high school who tried to scam us with his "super memory" spiel who tried to show us how disorganized our thoughts were by shouting out if anybody could tell what position in the alphabet the letter "i" was, thinking that we'd have to manually count it out. I, of course, immediately called out, "Nine." I've done so many word puzzles that I know the numeric position of the alphabet by heart. I can also recite it backwards without thinking. Rrhain Thank you for your submission to Science. Your paper was reviewed by a jury of seventh graders so that they could look for balance and to allow them to make up their own minds. We are sorry to say that they found your paper "bogus," specifically describing the section on the laboratory work "boring." We regret that we will be unable to publish your work at this time.

Many many times my spelling has been corrected by other members. I realize correct spelling is important to some, even to the point of obsession. However, if the word is recognizable and in context, what is the big problem? This has nothing to do with "smart people," an undefined term. I'm pretty sure everyone has received this chain email before. I've received like three or times. Anyhow, as the paragraph suggests, "it deosn't mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer be in the rghit pclae. The rset can be a taotl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit a porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe." Pretty much anyone familiar with the English language could read this with relative ease. It has nothing to do with how smart someone is. “I know where I am and who I am. I'm on the brink of disillusionment, on the eve of bitter sweet. I'm perpetually one step away from either collapse or rebirth. I am exactly where I need to be. Either way I go towards rebirth, for a total collapse often brings a rebirth." -Andrew Jaramillo

The point was 'why is correct spelling so important to some when nothing is lost in communication'?Many posters on this forum have been 'corrected' and 'judged' and 'ignored' because of incorrect spelling. I truly don't think correct spelling is of great concern when it can clearly be understood, maybe with a little patience and effort.

If you want people to expend effort reading what you have written, it's only polite to put effort into writing it - this includes good spelling and good grammar!

I'd hardly call the semi-sentence above as "best effort". First of all, "one" is singular. But more importantly, "thier" is actually spelled "their". ..................................and if one is very polite and has put in thier best effort?
When I communicate online, I try my best to not make common mistakes. Do I make mistakes? Sure. Do I try not to? You betcha. I also try my best when I communicate verbally in real life. I try my best not to stutter, use fillers like "um" and "uh", etc. Do I sometimes stutter and use fillers? You betcha. The point is some effort is better than none. I'm trying to see things your way, but I can't put my head that far up my ass.

Umm............. there is a fine example of missing the point.I meant someONE. Your understanding makes no sense at all. Let me clarify, what if someone has put in their best effort and is very polite? Edited by pelican, : No reason given.

Noone here is a monster. If best effort and politeness are both present, then we will return in kind. That said, little or no effort is neither polite nor "best effort". I meant someONE. Noone here is a monster. If best effort and politeness are both present, then we will return in kind. That said, little or no effort is neither polite nor "best effort". How would you tell the difference? For example, my incorrect spelling of 'their' was pointed out to me. I wasn't being impolite and I made an honest mistake. Drawing attention to this irrelevent mistake, drew attention away from the point. There was no comprehension whatsoever of what I was saying and it wasn't because I made a spelling mistake. Comprehende?

I assure you, normally I wouldn't have been so petty. However, notice that you misspelled it in the very sentence that you talked about best effort...
For example, my incorrect spelling of 'their' was pointed out to me. I wasn't being impolite and I made an honest mistake. How would you tell the difference? Well, I'll answer this in a little bit.

As I pointed out before, noone here is a monster. Unintentional mistakes are mostly ignored. And trust me, everyone makes mistakes, including em. That said, just how many "unintentional" mistakes should there be before they become a distraction? It's like where does orange ends and yellow begins. I know it when I see it. Take it how you like. When I write, I keep my eyes open for mistakes that might distract people from the piont I'm trying to make. Now, don't be a liar and tell me you didn't just wince at that misspelling. I'm trying to see things your way, but I can't put my head that far up my ass.
