Now, I infer from scottnesss reply that he means that everyone alive today must make take a theological stance before we can hold any assumptions about the world.
Beware! Scottness is fast and loose with definitions. I suspect the phase "theological stance" will become a source of difficulty.

do we have a god shaped hole in our head that must be filled before we can make assumptions about the world.
I love the term "God shaped Hole". I looked it up and it appears that it was coined by Blaise Pascal.
I suspect the meaning here is that we all have an innate desire to know God and want to fill the void. Why one has to fill this void before making any assumptions about the world is crazy. I know toddlers make plenty of assumptions about the world and they have not considered any theological issues yet - same with developmentally disabled people.
As far as every one having a "God Shaped Hole". I suspect this is not even true for at least two reasons (probably more if I think about):
If it is true, then there are a lot of different shaped holes out there! A great number of very sincere people, earnestly search and find a great variety of different religious fillings to fill this hole. There does not seem to be any consistency. One would think that if there is one God, and this being placed holes in our heads, then these holes would be roughly the same shape. No proof of that, quite the opposite.
While personally I have always had a desire to understand origins, creation and the divine, conversely, I have known many many people who could care less, and the weekend weather report weighs more on their minds than anything.
