yes. belle and sebastian are awesome. i only know two people who like them though. Is Belle and Sebastian really that unknown? Maybe I've just been spoiled by always having lived near one college or another.
hot. I like to think so.

I'm going to definitely check out those earlier Elvis Costello albums then.
Aphex Twin are (is? - hes only one bloke) really good. Listening to Aphex was the first time I thought "yes! electronic music can be music I can understand as a song, and is something that I want to listen to on my walkman". Well, maybe I didn't think that exactly, but near enough. It might not be your cup of tea of course, and sometimes he goes off on totally unlistenable odesseys of hellnoise (but even thats great in small doses). I'd recommend Windowlicker or Come To Daddy if you care to hear a couple of his more accessable songs. Come to daddy is particularly fun because its a kind of logical conclusion of heavy metal, with two lines of lyrics... "come to daddy" and "I will eat your soul" deployed for maximum heavy metal fun. The middle 8 scream never fails to get the hairs standing up on the back of my neck. Windowlicker has a great hook and fantastic publicity stills.... Page Not Found - 404 Ah, that's better.

Cool, I'll see what I can grab off iTunes for a sampler. Thanks for the heads up.
iTunes impulse buying is going to wind up costing me my soul. But that's a worry for another day.

cannot sing to save my life Yeah, neither can I. I was thinking that if I ever started covering songs by pop bands, I'd have to go with Cake or Talking Heads, so I can just spit out spoken word lyrics.

Either that or Primus; of course, you'd have to play bass like you were a 4 armed alien! Les talks way more than he sings, but he is an insane bassist.

Primus'd probably work better on banjo. Although I do like the idea of Burning Down the House, Scruggs style.

I'm surprised to see little or no mention of Jack & Meg here. Seems that most every rock fan I know loves this duo. Every album is superb, but for some reason they've mostly been limited to alt-rock and Triple-A playlists (I suppose they might be popular on college stations, but I don't live in a college town). Mainstream rock pays them no attention, save the one single Seven Nation Army.
Personally, I think the White Stripes are the best rock band to come along since Nirvana. Keep America Safe AND Free! |

Like pre-rock era pop standards. The latest issue of Alabama's car tags reference one of my all-time favorites: Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong's Stars Fell On Alabama.
The Andrews Sisters are also great. I absolutely love Rum & Coca-Cola, which seems to reflect a bit of reggea influence. Lena Horne's Stormy Weather is always good for relaxing, as is Dinah Shore's Shoe Fly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdie. The latter was used in a wonderful car commercial a few years ago, but I can't remember what car was being pitched. Keep America Safe AND Free! |

I play guitar okay (nothing fancy), a very basic piano, and have just started trying to get to grips with the harmonica (ah ebay! you send me cool stuff in the post). I write songs, so I have to sing (no one else will) but I sound pretty weak.
I just remembered a great lyric... Standing in line just to buy a potato!

quote: Yeah, like "Little Wing"? That song I originally thought was done by Stevie Ray Vaughn, Hendrix is the originator. I hate radio, they play a good song once in a while on supposedly "Rock" stations, then they play 80s hair bands. Thanks for giving me the oppurtunity to leech knowledge off of all you guys.

I've been playing guitar since November of last year. I've progressed without an instructor for a while now, he is at
quote: He unfortunatly decided to move to Georgia. Things happen for a reason though. I would probably be either a lot better or have a totally different, probably more classical style if he was still around. I'm good I guess, like to play the blues. Really into Hendrix. When I start recording, I'll try to post something. The band name is being debated though, I like "Crumb Cake", and they like the other one I made up, "Sacred Highway", (The road to maccu pichu.) Firstly, I'm glad to see that Belle and Sebastian are appreciated round your neck of the woods. Respected down this way too, they toured here last year but I didn't really know much about them at the time, so didn't go see them I'd say they're one of the best bands I've heard in the last few years.

I'd recommend Windowlicker or Come To Daddy Both great tracks. If you haven't already, you need to see the videoclips for both of these. Seriously twisted, but 2 of the best clips I've ever seen. Generally they're the sort of things one only sees at around 2 in the morning while completely off one's head.
