I wouldn't sweat it.
Ship Island sees hundreds of visitors in a day some times, and it's been years since anyone got hit there. I have friends who lifeguard out there and take dozens of kids out for the whole day, and I've been there myself, as well as a few other barrier islands around here. I really don't think you have anything to worry about. I think it's merely an issue of reporting.
