WoW
Ok, confession time - the reason I don't post more is I play Warcraft like a fiend.
My first MMORPG and I think I made a great choice - I tried a bit of Lineage and got so utterly fed up of the constant grinding... I was lucky enough to jump into the European Beta and Final Beta tests of World of Warcraft, and they were like a breath of fresh air.
Now, here's the thing - I started on a PvP server on the recommendation of a friend of mine, and that was a huge mistake. The mentality and intelligence of the average PvP player is actually very similar to a rabbit's - they are focused on only one thing, have all the brains of a concussed jellyfish, and have serious trouble communicating in any rational manner. (Apologies to any PvPers, but I had some bad experiences...)
So after about 3 months of the Final Beta and the release of WoW, I had had enough of it and started a character on an RP server in desperation. Almost straight away I noticed the difference - I was finally enjoying the amazing setting Blizzard had created, because instead of being just another player mindlessly working on being more "l33t", I was truly a character, and a part of the world.
(Long story short, my character is an amnesiac Night Elf druid, and I played out a massive RP arc and backstory over the course of 60 levels which finished with an incredible 3 hour long showdown in Darnassus It was by far the best roleplaying I have ever done.)
So anyway, getting to the point: WoW is great because it's very easy to get into - the gameplay is astonishingly user-friendly, and learning how to do the basic stuff is almost instinctive. Now, this doesn't make the game too easy period - it just makes it simple to get started. The game gets more difficult when you start to get creative, and when you start teaming up with others to handle a dungeon. It's a whole new ball game when you've hit 60 and there are 9 other people with you in there relying on you to do a certain job, and you're either good or you're all dead. You have to figure out what is the right thing to do in the middle of a fight - and it gets even harder when you're facing a boss, and the entire group has to collectively develop a strategy to defeat them.
But what makes WoW incredible is the world itself. Azeroth (where WoW is based) is huge, but you can still get anywhere in few minutes. Every area has its own unique look and feel, and is full of weird and wonderful things to do and see. You never have to grind, if you don't want to - hell, if you're on an RP server, you could go to the nearest inn and get your character drunk if you felt like it. On top of that, there's the vast history of Warcraft I, II, III that brings depth to just about everything in the game - so if you're an undead mage, let's say, taking a walk through the Undercity, you could learn most of the history and character of the undead just by talking to random NPCs. Lineage was pretty generic and pale in comparison.
So yeah. That's my take on it all. I've played more adventure games on PC than I can remember, but Warcraft is the best yet.
