So, Petrophysics, in the thread, "Are Thoughts Trancendent?", made the claim that he can read minds, or as he puts it "perceive people's thoughts", and even provided an example.
here
An excerpt:
quote:
BTW even though I can perceive other people’s thoughts I have no psychic/spiritual ability. I only detect EM radiation people are naturally putting out. I don’t do it very often since most of the time like everyone else I’m occupied thinking and if a person is primarily thinking in words and symbols I don’t perceive that very well. They have to be thinking of an actual event in their lives. Let me give you an example. When my older son was 9 he mentioned that nobody could read people’s thoughts. I told him that some people could and asked him to close his eyes and recall sometime in his life when he was having a good time and keep thinking about it, but to say absolutely nothing. I then shut everything off and became a “total observer paying attention”. What happened was I felt something across the upper part of my chest and when I “looked” at “paid close attention” to it, I realized and saw in my mind that I was in a swimming pool (could feel that water lapping against my chest) and saw my older brother standing at the side of the pool on his deck( this was a “picture” from my son’s viewpoint as it would have had to have been, he was doing the recalling). So I said to my son it was the summer before last, you are in Uncle Joe’s pool looking up at him on the deck. His mouth dropped open, yes that was exactly what he was recalling.
I pointed out some major flaws with his example here, but Petro never addressed them.
An obvious problem with your test is that you are intimately aware of just about everything that has happened to your own child. It isn't a surprise that you would be able to be so specific, since the high points in a 9 year old's life are likely to be connected to his family, and his father is likely to know about them.
Another obvious flaw in your test was that you didn't write down your "reading" before asking him to tell you what he was thinking about. He could have changed his thought to conform to what you said yours was because he wanted his dad to be a real mind reader, or to please you.
Have you ever tested your ability on total strangers, where careful protocols are followed, like not speaking with the person at all beforehand and you both writing down your "results" before revealing them?
Others in that thread asked him why he doesn't use his remarkable ability to prevent crime, or to win the Randi Foundation prize and then donate the money to charity.
Any responses, from anyone?

I predict that Petrophysics will be unable to detect this thread.

Well, when I really try I can read people's minds too. It's called picking up clues here and there and remembering details of my target person.
For example, when I was in college, I noticed something funny about my resident assistant's attitude toward women. He never actually said anything, but I guess I picked up enough clue to know this christian dude was a sexist. I mentioned it once to him and he spent the next hour trying to convince me he wasn't a sexist. Next day I had lunch with him and he began to tell me his case about how god created women to be "lesser" than men. This guy had biblical support too. He was one of those that carried a bible with him all the time.
But the point was I didn't actually read his mind. I just noticed from the way he talked of the special roles he thought god had planned for men and for women.
I'm just wondering if this is what's going on with Petrophysics but I guess on a more detailed scale. Perhaps this guy can subconsciously make cold readings of someone else and somehow convinced himself that he's actually reading the person's mind?
When it comes to it, I really don't know what's going on here. since petrophysics isn't that forthcoming about the details of his mindreading ability, I don't see how any of what he said is useful to us.

Owing to the deficiency of the English language, I have occasionally used the academic jargon generator to produce phrases that even I don't fully understand. The jargons are not meant to offend anyone or to insult anyone's intelligence!

Well, yeah, that's pretty much what I think, too.
The whole reason I called him out on this thread is because he took a shot at liberals in another thread, specifically calling most of us "irrational".
He's claiming he can read minds through picking up their brain waves, but we're the irrational ones.
Riiiiight.

bump for PurpleDawn, does Midol work?
PD,
No, Midol doesn't work! It cannot stop you from becoming a bitch.
This thread's existence is the proof of that.

Funny; what it proved to me is that you're an idiot.
I am unable to show myself to be an idiot as much as you did yourself in the Philosophy Thread.
So you have me beat there.
Edited by petrophysics, : No reason given.

to Crashfrog
Are you still delusional enough to think you "won" that philosophy debate?

I understand.
You need to read everything here. You have not done that so you are lost.
Most people show up here and start posting, I didn't do that.
I have read everything for the last year and a half and then some.
So if you missed what I was refering to, to bad.

Re: to Crashfrog

I guess I don't really think of it as "win" or "loss." I didn't expect my arguments to sway anyone around to my opinion if they were already committed to philosophy's merits.
And that is what we were talking about - opinions. I did prove that philosophy does not have rigor as a field; the only disagreement was the significance of that, and I didn't expect that disagreement to be resolved.
But I don't recall any time that I asserted that I "won" that debate. What are you talking about, exactly? You did assert that you're a mind reader, which is a pretty extraordinary claim, and now you're calling people names because that claim has been shown to be unsupported. Why is that such a big deal to you?

Rocket Seance
Far too many personal attacks and mudslinging in this thread for my satisfaction! Nator, as an admin I will let you reopen it if you really insist.
For now, I'm closing it, however.

Petro why so sensitive?

ROTFLMAO!!!
Petro, how do you think it looks to everyone that you have resorted to calling me a bitch instead of actually addressing the OP? I haven't called you any names, yet here you are, getting all emotional and lashing out, um...irrationally.
Whazza matter, hon? Going through male menopause or something?
I am not a "bitch" for holding your feet to the fire regarding your claim of being a mind reader, nor for starting this thread in response to your incredibly ironic accusation that liberals are irrational.
If I'm just a bitch with no foundation for my OP, then it should be very easy for you to demolish it with a rebuttal, shouldn't it?
