Firefly

Anybody into this series when it was on?Dan, you had to have fallen in love with Inara.Holmes, I'd like to resume our discussion about why you are totally wrong to have not liked it.

Loved this series, love all of Joss's work (yes even the original Buffy movie and Alien: Ressurection, the work that he's disowned), but this one most of all. The writing and characters are/were just so good.

Even the first season of Angel?I dunno man, that first season was pretty God-awful. It didn't even get passably good until the storyline in Lorne's homeworld at the end of second season.

Me, I've got a crush on both Mal and Wash.And the fact that Fox cancelled Firefly in mid-season, even though there was already a devoted fan following that was growing just confirms to me that they are a bunch of wankers who wouldn't know good storytelling, cinematography, writing, directing, or acting if it bit them on the ass.I hate them.Are you looking forward to Serenity? I'm a little nervous about it, to tell you the truth. Whedon's record at making a good feature film is not that great, although we will see what he does now that he has such a great team of writers with him and a real budget.

The first season of Angel was hit and miss, but so was the first of season of Buffy. I tend to give them both an A effort and like it even if the execution aint totally up to snuff.As for Firefly lines my favorites are:Shindig

Was this the Fox network - broadcast TV, or was this some cable TV thing? I don't have cable. If it was broadcast, they must of done a pretty feeble job of promoting it - I never heard of it much less saw it. In what part of the year was it on?Moose

At Dragon Con in Atlanta this year, I got to see Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, and Jewel Staite(sp?) give several talks. Fillion is a very entertaining speaker. He was also very gracious. One of the more enjoyable biots were when Fillion said that people say fans who go to things like DragonCon have trouble dealing with reality, but that when he was on a daytime soap he did several soap opera conventions and those people were freaking terrifying. Apparently the science fiction types are restrained and reasonable by comparison.One popular event at Dragon con is the Atlanta Radio Theater. They do live radio productions (more fun then it sounds) of classic science fiction and horror. This year they did Robert Heinlein's "The Menace from Earth" and Jewel Staite was the guest star. Hells yes. I don't think the same crap-risk is there as other Whedon movies... this is his project, y'know? It's not like it's something a studio is doing that he happens to be hired to work on.

Naw... first season of Buffy was low-budget and kinda ghetto, but still pretty solid fun. First season of Angel had me looking for a pair of chopsticks so I could jab one in each eye until they poked through into my brain and ended the horrible pain of watching the damn show.

I love Firefly !
Its one the best scifi for TV ever made. Beeing a scifi fan in general you have to put up with alot of crap. Almost anything with sci-fi in it is targeted at 13yr olds.Firefly feels realistic in a humerous way! No silly looking aliens or meaningless tech-talk like in startrek.
I really like the fact that they are just a small pirate ship with a small crew, sneaking from one half-legal job to the next. Still when the series ends you are beginning to get this feeling that they are in a universe that is alive outside the screen.
All this and the fact that Josh is the master of character development I really like buffy alot too, not season one though.

It was on in the fall of 2002.Whedon made a really good 2 hour pilot, which was broadcast after they cancelled the series.Fox didn't like the pilot because they are stupid fuckheads, so they made Whedon and Minear write a regular-length episode in a single weekend as a different pilot, that was brilliant for a weekend of work but not that great compared to the real pilot.It kills me because Firefly would be in it's 3rd season by now.Does anyone remember how completely awesome the 3rd seasons of Angel and Buffy were?Fox is a fay-fay duh pee-yen.

Holmes indicated that he wasn't that impressed with Firefly because he thought that it was, on the whole, derivitave.My reply to that is that I agree that it is derivitave. Whedon is quite good at setting us up in these familiar genres and themes for the purpose of tweaking and twisting them in unexpected ways.Thus, fun.Besides, just because some art is derivitave doesn't mean it is less good.Nearly all blues music has the same chord progression. When you hear a blues song, you know right away that it is a blues song.Does that mean we might as well stop writing new songs using that format?Any comments?

Totally agreed. My old description of Whedon was that he was an excellent cover artist. He'd lift film tricks and story conventions from other creators, and rearrange them into something generally new. Hell, at least half of Buffy is taken nigh-on directly from the old Claremont/Byrne X-Men run. (Right down to the frikkin' Dark Phoenix storyline at the end of season 6.) Doesn't make it any less entertaining. Or, when you get down to it, any less original. Drawing inspiration from someone else, even if you wear it on your sleeve, doesn't mean you're not doing something new with it.Although for what it's worth, I'm also a nut for Johnny Cash and Oscar Wilde. So I might just lean towards people who draw inspiration from others. Yep. Oh, yeah. It's one of my favorites.
