Re: Peter
You see, as YOU interpret the Bible, Peter is not the Rock on which the church is founded.
But that is YOUR interpretation.
It is exactly things like this that show that the Bible is not accurate (except in an individuals peculiar interpretation).
One of the beauties of the literalists is that they can interpret it anyway they want.

Getting back to the original question, is the Bible historically proven/provable? People have been trying to prove the Bible stories for centuries, but as of yet there has been no real success. There have been numerous searches for the holy grail, Ark of the covenant, the true cross and every religious relic from here to Babylon. There have been dozens of groups searching for Noahs Ark alone, often based on claims of people having seen it, satillite photos and ancient texts, all of them have returned empty handed so far.
When it comes to the relics themselves its always hard to know what is true and what is created to make a quick buck. Around Jarusalem there are so many people selling pieces of the true cross that you could build a house with the amount of wood.
What you have to remember about the ancient stories is that they were based on actual locations, and sometimes on actual events, but that alone doesn't prove the supernatural claims made elsewhere. It would be the same if in a thousand years you saw an episode of a TV drama, it takes place in a known area, it mentions actual events, it uses real peoples names. The story is made as believeable as possible. You have to find other sources to confirm or deny, you need proof equal to the claim (mundane claims can have mundane evidence, but supernatural claims require pretty special evidence).
There are many examples of things that are quite likely to be based on actual events, but were expanded on to make them supernatural when they needn't be. For example Sodom destoryed by fire and brimstone was most likely torched by invading army or destroyed by volcano. Noahs Ark works fine if its a local event and Jobs trails while terrible could have just been one unlucky bugger who suffered and looked for reasons.
