Because Newton was pretty well into Gematria - a kind of Biblical numerology. He spent a lot of his mathematical genius calculating the date of Armaggedon, the number, star-sign and postal code of the beast etc.Just a moment...BTW - so was John Napier, the Scottish mathematician and discoverer of logarithms. He apparently only got round to working on logarithms because the calculations required to demonstrate that the Pope was the beat of the Apocalypse were so abstruse.
