I found a part in Gen. 8:8-11 that talked about when Noah sent the dove to the land to see if the water was gone. The bird came back and there was no place to rest her feet. Then a week later he sent her out again and she came back with a olive branch that was PLUCKED. How did the water go down and a tree grow in a week? And it says in 7:22 that all living things were desroyed. If so then where did the branch come from? thanks tami
I am a 16 year-old fixing to do a debate on evolution/creation. Any ideas would be great ------------------tami judah [This message has been edited by tamijudah, 03-08-2003]

As soon as the hand of God needs to be brought in to explain away 'problems', you may as well give up on trying to use any science or logic whatsoever. It's like inventing a perpetual motion machine that needs the odd nudge to keep it going.

If you notice in the Genesis 7:22 passage it is in reference to all creatures that have the breath of life in there nostrils and has nothing to do with plant life, Gods wrath was not for the plants but because of the evil of man...
I wonder how long can olive trees survive fully submerged in water? I also believe the atmosphere to have been still superior and all genetics of all things likewise... so it may have not been a big thing to have happened... for all we know the branch was not from a living tree but from one the dove found on the ground.

quote:In a global flood scenario which scours enough surface soil and rock to produce the layers of rock posited by people who hold this view the violence of the flood event would leave absolutely nothing on the surface. Of course, a flood of that violence would also mix up the remains of the animals and plants caught up in it so much that distinct fossil beds wouldn't form either ... oops, that means you either have a violent flood and geological layers but no fossil beds or olive trees, or a gentle flood that allows fossil beds to form and olive trees to survive but all those geological layers had to have formed prior to the flood. Of course since I don't consider the Genesis account to relate a story about a global floodI don't have that problem to solve. Alan

you jump to the gun in assuming on our YEC behalf, certainly I believe the flood was tidal, but I am not so sure that it would have absolutly devestated everything or covered everything up with the shifting of the sands... we must also remember there were no sea creatures in the the ark, so we do know that things did survive, so how would it be a big thing for such things as trees to have been ripped from their roots and floated the whole of the flood and than came to rest as did the ark...
I must correct myself though because it is actually a olive leaf that the dove brought back and not a branch... so my question changes to how hard would it be for a leaf to float throughout the flood? or even a leaf yet on a branch? and if it is from a new growth, how long does it take for a leaf to sprout? or a drowned plant to revive if at all?

I'm not denying that a non-violent flood is possible. Just that if you accept that position you can't also simultaneously claim the flood layed down the geological column. So, without the Flood how can you explain the geological column except through gradual deposition (possibly including occasional catastophies) over a long period of time (millions or 100s of millions of years) during which time animals and plants lived, died and were fossilised.
But as I said, it's not my problem because I don't accept the almost heretical reading of the opening chapters of Genesis that would demand this. Alan

Cetaceans have the breath of life in their nostrils - why weren't they destroyed in the flood? Did Noah have a blue whale on the ark? ------------------o--greyline--o

If you were to read chapters seven and eight of Genesis, you would discover that at least nine months passed between when the rains stopped and when Noah left the ark. In the fourth month, the ark became lodged in the mountains of Ararat. Therefore the plants at the tops of the mountains could have had up to five months of growth by the time Noah released the dove. These plants could also have been spared the worst of the floods effects on the landscape simply because the heavier silts might not have been transported to their elevated position.
