I was recently sent this link to an article by Troy Britain called "Gill slits by any other name". I found it a great read and a really nice summary of the creationist errors (lack of understanding? Perhaps deception?) about pharyngeal pouches in chordates. “Gill slits” by any other name… | Playing Chess with Pigeons

But that's in April at the height of Wind Season."The Christian church, in its attitude toward science, shows the mind of a more or less enlightened man of the Thirteenth Century. It no longer believes that the earth is flat, but it is still convinced that prayer can cure after medicine fails." H L Mencken |

Looking Ahead: The Controversy In 2014, by The Sensuous Curmudgeon
Here it comes our year-end rant that will upset almost everyone. This has become a tradition around here as each year comes to a close, we discuss what the new year will be like in The Controversy between evolution and creationism. Some of this is copied from our year-end posts of earlier years, because certain things never change. Religious belief does not constitute scientific evidence, nor does it convey scientific knowledge. Belief gets in the way of learning--Robert A. Heinlein How can I possibly put a new idea into your heads, if I do not first remove your delusions?--Robert A. Heinlein It's not what we don't know that hurts, it's what we know that ain't so--Will Rogers If I am entitled to something, someone else is obliged to pay--Jerry Pournelle If a religion's teachings are true, then it should have nothing to fear from science...--dwise1 |

Stealing a roxrkool message from elsewhere:
roxrkool writes: Do a little research on "historical sciences." There are experimental (observational) sciences, whose goal is to identify and test physical laws, and historical/interpretive sciences, whose goal is to research past events and reconstruct the history of these events. A good place to start is the paper Geological Reasoning: Geology as an interpretive and historical science, R. Frodeman, 1995 (PDF). And a short excerpt that I liked:

I've often argued this position but have never managed to say it as well as this:
John Timmer writes: Almost all science is fundamentally a reconstruction of the pastthe only difference is how far into the past the reconstruction reaches. --Percy

Apparently, a concept far too advanced for Creationists to understand.
Ham didn't bother to explain why this assumption would be problematic, but that's really irrelevant given that we don't assume that the laws extend into the indefinite past. We have evidence that they do. Edited by roxrkool, : No reason given.

Just more definitional questionbegging. Either you can validate your interpretations to the satisfaction of all who understand your test or you have only interpretations. Too much of both old earth geology and evolutionist genetics is nothing but interpretation that is subject to other interpretations. But apparently nobody wants to recognize what this controversy is REALLY about, you'd rather define it out of existence, makes you all feel warm and fuzzy.

There was an extremely well balanced discussion amongst experts on Social Darwinism on BBC radio this morning. There's a podcast available - I don't know whether US people can get it or not.
This should fill in the details for a discussion that was going on elsewhere on another topic.
Social Darwinism 20 Feb 14 Thu, 20 Feb 14Duration: 42 mins Social Darwinism was the idea that Charles Darwin's theory about evolution, as set out in his masterpiece On the Origin of Species in 1859, could also be applied to human society. One thinker particularly associated with this movement was Herbert Spencer, who argued that competition among humans was beneficial, because it ensured that only the healthiest and most intelligent individuals would succeed. Social Darwinism remained influential for several decades, although its connection with eugenics and adoption as an ideological position by Fascist regimes ensured its eventual downfall from intellectual respectability. Melvyn Bragg is joined by Adam Kuper, Centennial Professor of Anthropology at the LSE, University of London; Gregory Radick, Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Leeds and Charlotte Sleigh, Reader in the History of Science at the University of Kent.
