Author | Topic: Where Did the Notion of God Come From?? | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Cute. You're dodging.
You said that Superman was easy, because we see things flying, and we see men. So a man flying, even by a means we don't understand, is easy to come up with. It goes both ways. We see people create life on a daily basis.* So a story about a being who creates life, even by a means we don't understand, is easy to come up with. To put it another way... we see people creating things. We see everything around us. Coming up with a story about someone who creates everything around us isn't a hard thing to do. As for God being indescribable, you're confusing that "indescribable" with "not described". That's not an impossible story, it's just bad characterization.
* - You see, the woman lies next to the man, they make some grunting noises, and nine months later, out pops life. "As the days go by, we face the increasing inevitability that we are alone in a godless, uninhabited, hostile and meaningless universe. Still, you've got to laugh, haven't you?" -Holly

God really isn't that indescribable in much of the Bible. The underlying idea in the OT is often the typical Middle Eastern patron God with an overlay of monotheism. And human form is either implied or specifically stated in a few places (e.g. Jacob wrestling with God in Genesis 32:24-30). And that is part of the reason why it gets so complicated - you've got two or more very different ideas of God all mixed up. No wonder God is hard to describe.
And "HaShem" means "The Name" - it's just a reference to the tetragrammaton without saying it (as "Adonai" is used when by the Jews when they read their scriptures out loud).

God was in fact modeled after me. It was a haphazard feeble attempt but everybody had to accept it, it was too hard to try it again.

you've got two or more very different ideas of God all mixed up. No wonder God is hard to describe. What about the Holy Spirit? Ofcourse, human form is implied - yes, when Jacob wrestles with him, but it is also stated that we are made in the image of God, not the other way around. It may seem easy to just say "we invented him" but there is no way you can prove that - it is guesswork. Didn't a few people appear to Abraham? What about when people can't look upon God's face? What about when God says "I am that I am"? It's Hardly based on something else.

* - You see, the woman lies next to the man, they make some grunting noises, and nine months later, out pops life. Yes, but Dan, grunting noises don't produce life. Didn't anyone tell you about what happens while they lie together? I guaruntee grunting noises aren't enough to make life. Also, surely people would make a female god if they saw that the life comes from the woman. They would see that the life comes from her each time. Or better still, they would make two gods, male and female. Why would it be that they came up with the non-obvious, instead of these two ideas? I'm bored with this debate already - because it's all speculatice, I must bow out.

Both my daughters were the direct result of grunting noises. Nobody in their right mind would have anything to do with A God thats subject to PMS...everybody would have to offer up doughnuts and cake and suffer all kinds of mental anguish once a month just to appease her.

Yes, but what man wouldn't want a woman god? I mean, haven't you heard of sex godesses?
Surely if God was "made-up" then He would be she. The God of the bible is far from "fitting". He says worship him and not the flesh. If he was made up by man then he would in no way be like the God of the bible.

Have you missed the point about women being the ones who deliver life? - If men could see this, surely women would conclude a woman god also.
No Rocket, you have it all wrong in your mind. You'll say anything against the possibility of God, it is God who made us. Believest thou this?

Oh come on Mike
In the day that the bible was written (im not going to say when god was made up, because that wouldnt fit too closely to the rest of my arguements). Men were in power, what would it look like if suddenly they said that the real Power was female! Anarchy, no one would be doing the washing, collecting the water etc etc (please note i am taking the micheal at this point, i do not truely believe this is where women belong (for instance they belong in the bedroom too )). Also there have been many female gods, just because your christian doesnt mean your god is the only one in the world ( i know it sorta does, but you know what i mean). The god in the bible seems very much how i would want a god to be, forgiving (we all need that) omnipotent (we want the top dog to be powerful, else what rights he got at being top dog), omniscient (same as last time). A perfect benevolent father figure. Kills the bad people (since we are never the bad people its always good), protects you etc etc. I cannot imagine a more perfect god to be honest. Unseul Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life....

Why would it be that they came up with the non-obvious, instead of these two ideas? Because, a long time ago, people thought that sperm carried the future baby, and the egg was just for nutrition. Most myths involve just a male creator god, who usually creates life by, since he lacks a female partner, taking matters into his own hand, if you know what I mean. Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn! I cannot imagine a more perfect god to be honest. That' right. You couldn't imagine God. Without God you wouldn't be here.
The god in the bible seems very much how i would want a god to be, It is irrelevant. It is how God is, because it is the truth. 'preciate the humor. So far, I haven't washed any dishes this week. Bark bark bark, nag nag nag. Unseul, don't be uncool, you are halfway to the truth sitting on your fence. You shouldn't be a hindrance to the reality of God like this. Set your sites on the realities of Christ. Keep reading your NT and don't be hindered by atheists.

Thats true, but later on the females realized that the female Gods were getting blamed for all the bad things that happened...thats when the male God conspiracy surfaced. Now every bad thing is pawned off on a male God....very clever, very, very clever.
