Re: The Case of the Inexplicably Called "Unexplainable" Missing Stump
Does your wife consider it a mystery too?
Yes, she does. She came home that day, and said, "How did you manage to get rid of that stump?"
Yup, she's in on the conspiracy too.
===
Who cut down the tree?
I did, some time before. But I didn't dig up that stump.
Yeah, and you did not kill the deputy, we've heard that one before.
Tell me, if a tree stump mysteriously disappears and there's no one around to watch, does it produce a puff of smoke?

There's also the Guardian Angel theory. This Guardian Angel said to herself, "If that old fool goes out there and tries to dig this stump up with a shovel, in this heat and humidity, he's going to have a heart attack. I'll get rid of it THIS TIME, and this time only."

Re: The Case of the Inexplicably Called "Unexplainable" Missing Stump
Okay, here's my theory.
Many many moons ago, when I was a strapping lad and determined to deny the Machine the Fruits of my Intellect, I took a number of manual labor jobs. I worked for a year or so as an "urban forester"--removing trees that threatened passers-by or sidewalks. Eventually, my conscience got the better of me, as I would rather watch sidewalks buckle and passersby be flattened than cut down another grand old tree.
Anyway, one day I was assigned to work with Big Daddy on the stumper. He routinely followed the tree removal team and ground down stumps with a device that looked like a thick circular saw mounted vertically, planing it back and forth over the stump until it was ground away, then covered the depression with dirt. That day his regular assistant was passed out drunk at home, so I was volunteered. We also cleaned up old stumps if we found them near the street or sidewalk, both as an aesthetic(!) issue and to prevent the pollarding regrowth.
Call the city. I bet they know who disappeared that stump.

ToED
And there's the Evil Demon theory: An Evil Demon said to himself: "If I take away this stump, that old fool is going to go nuts about it and a whole lot of people are going to theorize about how it happened, AND THEY'LL KNOCK A THREAD TERMINALLY OFF TOPIC, HA!"

By that method, some of the stump and all its roots should still be there, just sunk a bit beneath the surface, no? That would be an easy test.

Call the city. I bet they know who disappeared that stump.
I don't know what kind of city you live in, but my city does not provide free stump-removal from private residences.
My city is rather hard-nosed. Remember that song?
"If you are ever in Houston, you better walk right.
You better not gamble, you better not fight.
The sheriff, he will grab you, and the boys will pull you down,
And before you know it, you're penitentiary bound."

Re: What is sin?
You are not open minded; you are credulous. You are gullible.
quote:
no.
Yes.
Your point was that you are open-minded, and I am, by contrast I suppose, closed-minded, because you consider the existence of spirits as a real possibility, and quite likely had an active role in this particular case.
You admitted to having no evidence to support such a claim.
Being open-minded is to be open to ideas and explanations of all kinds.
It does not require one to give all ideas equal weight.
For example, it could be suggested that this man's engrams were all out of whack, or possibly his chakras, or his yin/yang balance, or perhaps he was being visited by aliens who put implants in his brain and they were talking to him and told him to kill himself.
Am I to consider you closed-minded if you do not seriously consider that any or all of these explanations are equally likely?
You must understand that to me, your perfectly serious mention of a "spirit of murder" possibly being involved is exactly the same as someone seriously mentioning the possibility of alien visitation, implants, etc., being involved.
I see all of these as quite equally with my open mind. Do you?
You had a bad day, as you explained. You were feeling down about all of the things that were going badly in your life. That happens to everybody at some time or another, pretty much.
quote:
It wasn't the thought of commiting suicide to solve my over inflated problems (in my own head) that scared me, it was the vision associated with it that freaked me out. Sorry, I do not believe this originated in my own mind.
Why couldn't it have?
quote:
It lasted about 1-2 seconds, and I have nver even thought of anything remotely close to what I saw, and felt.
So?
Why does that preclude it being produced in your own mind?

Re: Experiencing the Woo Woo
quote:
You and I are opposites concerning the woo-woo phenomenon.
Oh, no.
I agree that the penomena of feeling a woo-woo sensation, is very exciting and common.
We just disagree on where it comes from.
quote:
Can we conclude that there are no legitamete mysteries in life that science cannot explain?
No, I am sure that there are many mysteries that science will never be able to explain.
Science is a human endeavor, and as such is hampered by the limits on our own intellect, creativity, etc.
But "unexplained" does not equal "supernatural".
quote:
To you, it is a challenge, for it verifies your own self control.
I need self control as well, yet always await a parental figure (such as God) to step in and help me. Perhaps many charismatic Christians are immature.
Well, you said it, not me.
I would suggest that you have constructed the parental figure inside of yourself, and that you are the one helping you.
