Are you talking about Pakistan? India? Iran? Or, in the case of non-religious extremists... North Korea? China? Russia?
If China and North Korea team up to simultaneously take their neighboring countrymen (Taiwan & S. Korea), would America as a whole want to defend those countries anymore? I don't think so. So,would it be better to let Japan have a military and nuclear weapons to defend themselves?

Oh, yeah.
Although, even in this case, we're not talking about extinction. Despite the earlier tongue-in-cheek (I hope) comment, the superpowers are not religious extremists.
