Crashfrog,
Good of you to point out the literary meaning (as opposed to the popular) meaning of myth.
I had it explained to me this way. I hope it helps.
There is a story from Nazi Germany that a pastor told his congregation that anyone of Jewish descent would have to leave the church and not come back. Just as soon as he said this the Christ that was on the crucifix in the front of the church got down and walked out of the church. Now the question for us is, did this actually happen, is it literally true? And the answer is that of course it didn't. But is it the TRUTH? Most certainly it is.

Re: I want to believe but my mind's in the way
I had a quick skim over the first site you referenced and some of the messages posted and I noticed some facts too often overlooked.
Too many facts have been twisted since Jesus was resurected.
A quick personal dig-:
;The only portrait I've seen of 'The Virgin Mary' when Mary was alive, painted Mary as a black lady. Makes you wonder!
;The Pope was basicaly the head of the group creating todays calender and it's proven to be out by over two years. For every point I've seen made that dates could be incorrect, indepth studies have further proven Jesus' existance.
The Indian government sent a scientific team to mount ararat and proved the existance & validity of 'Noah's Ark'.
Try http://www.wyattarchaeology.com/ ,Hard core evidence of OT events.
The message given through John by Jesus about The Holy Spirit (trivial note - to the israelite (and that includes more than the jew) when you say 'THE' you often refer to God). John from what I've seen really was given to the profession of The Holy Spirit and Jesus made note of 'The Holy Spirit' as a person. Jesus even made reference to 'The Holy Spirit' being male, greater than himself, and (by relation of the statment of who he recieved all things (I don't think we give enough weight to 'All Things' in relation to the 'simple' & 'complex' reach of the plausabilities)) his father (as written). Then take into the account 'revelations' and the letters and so forth to 'The Sevenfold Angel/Spirit/Messenger'. Jesus makes a note of giving the center of his focus in the letters to sitting on his father's throne as he sat on the throne. Basicaly the exaltation of a man to God. Jesus's God. I could go on for a while over theoligy of the concept yet I'd just be opening myself to the possibility of an improved and refined game of chasing a tail.
The universe isn't eternal. Science has proven (the most niftiest feature of the 20th & 21st century in relation to biblical debate other than evolution (which supports the theory of 2 starting points of the evolution of moden man when you look at evolutionary tell signs and the origin area of both sides (another message of relavant triviality)) the universe has a wall of white hot plasma surrounding the theoreticaly spherical universe we're in. When matter is sucked into a black hole it's said the energy and matter is transfered to this wall supporting the universes growth. However the number of black holes differ as creation continues & eventualy the numbers of black holes are set to diminish. The result is a shrinking of the universes size as the energy/matter feeding is eventualy starved. "For Every Action There Is An Equal & Opposite Reaction". Personaly my fave view point is glory, have a look around at every possible definition of glory, when you're in the womb effectively you undergo your initial growth and suddenly (early pregnancy in the womb) you undergo a stage where the body suddenly destroys body mass. Hew the granite & then you chisel.
Jesus was God's personal sacrifice in my eyes for God's repentance. God had things he required forgiving for and technicaly by his own law it required sacrifice. He made it worth his while in the process, inspiring man (I find it strange how Jesus said he didn't come to change moses' law, attended animal sacrifices as required, and yet we got out of that area of God's law).
I couldn't write everything I could want to write as I don't believe that would be fair to either party.
Yet I will type this
Simple pure faith from what I've seen will prosper the person more effectively. Believe in the simplicities.
Enjoy your Christianity journey, May every footstep find God's Bounty
There's a great 'KJV' bible/reference tool with Hebrew and Greek one word transaltions have a look around at what was being written.

Re: I want to believe but my mind's in the way
I am sorry for diving in here late. I have not read through the whole thread, but I want to offer my 2cents to you Sarde.
Well, I do not have the proof you require to believe in God. A short time ago, I would have thought that I did. I think you need to find God on your own, and the fact that you are looking for him is a great start. You will find him, in God's timing, when you are ready for him. It would seem that you do not wnt to live in a false life of believing in God, bound by the rules of man or religion, but you seek the true heart of the Father. You seek understanding and truth.
When judging all things for yourself (or searching for God in religion or man), I would suggest to revert back to 2 rules. Love God with all your heart, and love others, as you love yourself. I think you would find that in your heart to be true, "if" God exists. That's what God is all about. If things deveate from that, then they aren't Godly.
God put his laws on our minds and hearts, starting from the NT, so you can always check in with that, to see if things make sense. But keep in mind that we are decieved, because the devil doesn't want us to find the truth.
So I offer this bit of advice. "If" God exists, then so does a spiritual world. Picture the world (reality) as a refelection of what is going on in the spiritual world. Don't just listen to what people say or look at what they do, but try to fathom what it is their spirit is doing/saying. Try to have a spiritual awareness about you, so that you might start to see what is going on right in front of you.
When you pray, spend some time listening for God. He will speak in a small still voice most of the time.
Read the bible, and ask God for you to receive what it is he means in the words of the bible, and how it applys to you.
When the approiate time comes, God will speak directly into your heart, and you will experience his Holy Spirit first hand, and then you will know for yourself. Unfortunatly it will all be subjective, bordering on the objective. In other words, there will always be the odds involved that will say, it is not possible, or God doesn't exist. But the odds of winning the NY lotto are like 17million to 1, but if you play it once, and win, then your personal odds were 1 to 1. Just becasue the odds are against you, doesn't mean you can't win, or God doesn't exist.
When God speaks to you in your heart, you will experience his love for yourself first hand, then the 2 commandments will become easier to make into reality, understanding that love. I am not saying you do not understand love at the current time, but I believe there will be an increase of that love, you already posess.
I do not know what it is in your life that you are missing spiritually, or not missing, but that I can only share my experiences with you, and hope that you get something from them. If it is God, then you probably will. You can email anytime, with any questions, or through the forum.
Keep in mind everyone that these are my belief's nothing more. If they are Godly belief's then they might make some sense to you. If there is one thing that this forum has taught me is that you cannot really prove God's existance, or should we even try. The only way I have been able to share God, or God's love with people, is by loving them
