MERP eh? Did they crit miss and trip over the imaginary rabbit?
I still play Dark Sun with my buddy but we only have him and I so he runs 4 charaters so it's a bit more like Hero Quest with some camping it up during the plot/talky bits. Next time you are in Plymouth come join us. Still, can't wait for 4th ed to come out, yes indeady! Edited by Larni, : No reason given. Edited by Larni, : No reason given.

Still, can't wait for 4th ed to come out, yes indeady! BOOOO! Boo to 4th edition!I am a second ed. stuck in the mud. The later stuff seems a bit power gamey to me, with all its feats and prestige classes and whatnot. I've been playing RPG's for a good twenty years (the name I use on this board is that of an old PC of mine) and not once have I felt inclined to worship the devil, not even when I was a player in a long-running game where all the characters were lawful evil devil-worshippers. This is because I know the difference between reality and fiction. I think that people link D&D with Satanism, because they have never seen anyone engage in either practise. Only the other day, I was asked by a friend "Do you all dress up then?". I think that a lot of people imagine D&D payers gathered around an engraved pentagram, chanting and sacrificing goats. If people knew that all the average game consists of is a bunch of silly sods sat in a room giggling, rolling dice and eating pizza, they would have a lot less problem with it. Actually, the same could probably be said for Satanism! As for MERP, have you seen Rolemaster? Now there is a system for rules lawyers. Any rule set that expects you to roll for weapon breakage every time you hit is beyond loony. Note that each different weapon has a different breakage chance. Just loony. It did have some good crit's though. My favourite went something like "Foes entire skeleton is shattered, he is reduced to a gelatinous pulp. Try a spatula." Mutate and Survive

And I think that's the issue with xians who hate it; they think it will lure people away from the 'true' god: check out this Chick.com: Dark Dungeons It's old so maybe I should not poke fun at it but what's the betting this stuff is still circulated? Any money you played a druid.

It is, and it's still both funny and a little nauseating.
Hell, I remember when my grandfather came downstairs and asked if we were playing "that Devil's game" again. Luckily he didn't have a Chick Tract handy...I might not have been able to keep from laughing in his face.

I emailed that guy to call him out on it; to challenge him to give me a reference in the then DMG where it actually has any occult significance.
3 years and I'm still waiting.

Read the rest of the tracts. They're good a for a disturbing laugh when you're bored. It's only frightening when you remember that there are a lot of idiot fundies who think that way.
I did get a Chick Tract pushed at me once, in 8th grade. Our class went to Boston, and a few of us spoke with a Buddhist briefly (we were all interested in religion and mythology) about the book he was selling. An evangelist came over and said "you boys know you're wasting your time with that garbage, right?" That and my grandfathers comments were part of what eventually drove me the self-examination and critical analysis of my Christian beliefs that eventually led me to Atheism. Thanks, Jack Chick! When you know you're going to wake up in three days, dying is not a sacrifice. It's a painful inconvenience.

If I had a pound for every fit DM that has tried to seduce me into their coven, or every friend who has hung himself becasue his character died... It sort of makes real RPG quite dull

Weeeeel, I hate to admit this but at uni I abused my power as a DM to snag myself a girlfriend.
I'm ashamed to say that I gave out a 'staff of the magi' to her. She was a Dragonlance junky and it has all the powers of Raistlins staff. I even had it have the same command words: shirak and durak if I remember correctly. I feel so ashamed. Still, arf arf!

Funny you should bring up the hilarious "Dark Dungeons", only a few days ago I was showing that to one of my players. It blew his mind, and he's from Texas, so fundies have to try quite hard to shock him!
If you think that second ed is old-style, another friend of mine spits on anything later than 1st edition. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter. I adapt whatever material I have to hand, using a lot of house rules. Any money you played a druid. Might have...Actually I've played most of the basic classes at one time or other, but I usually GM. D&D and Shadowrun mostly. Tomorrow I'm starting as a player in a Middle Earth game (not MERP, a new one), playing an enormously fat dwarf, with a comedy Yorkshireman accent. Any money the Star Wars game is popular round your way. Mutate and Survive

I'll probably sound really naive, but is D&D that game where one guy "talks" a story to everybody else and the rest play it out using characters they've invented. I think I remember people playing it in college.
If that is the case, are there really people who think its evil or are you all making a really elaborate joke. (Sorry if this is naive, but this stuff isn't too popular in Ireland. Or maybe it is and I'm blind.)

Really?! But it's just a little game with dices and that sort of stuff. Maybe I'm just not used to US culture. Is there a specific region of the US where these people are concentrated? Do they think other modern pastimes are bad? Like computer games for example.
Sorry for all the questions, but this is really interesting.

Really?! YA RLY
But it's just a little game with dices and that sort of stuff. Indeed. But there's pretending of magic, etc. That's the devil tricking people into thinking that magic is real or something like that.
Maybe I'm just not used to US culture. Its not just US culture, its US Fundamentalist Christian culture. Sometimes they make me ashamed to call myself a Christian.
Is there a specific region of the US where these people are concentrated? Have you ever heard of the Bible Belt?
Do they think other modern pastimes are bad? Like computer games for example. Oh sure. Please don't ask for sources, but they've claimed that video games cause violence in children and they've even gone so far as to say that even Harry Potter books shouldn't be read because they praise witchcraft etc. They're really lame and stupid, IMAO.
