The 'field' concept predates Young's 1805 experiments by 300 years.

Exactly
Light is light. Period.
We describe it mathematically by models. Sometimes we get the correct prediction of experiment by using the wave picture. At other times the particle picture is more appropriate.
But just as my name on a sheet of paper is not me, then describing light as a particle or a wave is not light.
