Re: Hawking bets 100 dollars against the Higgs
Unfortunately the media seem to be spinning it into a silly Hawking vs CERN stand-off.
Really? Stupid twats.

Re: Hawking bets 100 dollars against the Higgs
As one of our resident real physicists I was wondering if you had ever actually been to CERN. Are the current experiments directly relevant to your research interests?
If so what do you hope it finds? What would be the best result for the future of physics as a whole? I get the impression many professional physicists would almost be happiest if it actually found many of the current theories wanting. Is this true?
I find it mind boggling the level of knowledge and skill that went into creating the technology even before the experiments and the actual 'pure' physics of thing have begun.
Did physicists oversee the building of the LHC? Or was the construction more of an engineering project? (I apprecaite that the distinction between the two may well be a very braod blur).
As ever, your comments/thoughts appreciated.

LHC down for repairs
Bad news from CERN:
"The world's largest atom smasher -- which was launched with great fanfare earlier this month -- is more badly damaged than previously thought and will be out of commission for at least two months, its operators said Saturday. Experts have gone into the 17-mile (27-kilometer) circular tunnel housing the Large Hadron Collider under the Swiss-French border to examine the damage that halted operations about 36 hours after its September 10 startup, said James Gillies, spokesman for CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.
It's too early to say precisely what happened, but it seems to be a faulty electrical connection between two magnets that stopped superconducting, melted and led to a mechanical failure and let the helium out," Gillies told The Associated Press."

Re: LHC down for repairs
Just heard about that, that stinks!
quote:
Incident in LHC sector 34
Geneva, 20 September 2008. During commissioning (without beam) of the final LHC sector (sector 34) at high current for operation at 5 TeV, an incident occurred at mid-day on Friday 19 September resulting in a large helium leak into the tunnel. Preliminary investigations indicate that the most likely cause of the problem was a faulty electrical connection between two magnets, which probably melted at high current leading to mechanical failure. CERN ’s strict safety regulations ensured that at no time was there any risk to people.
A full investigation is underway, but it is already clear that the sector will have to be warmed up for repairs to take place. This implies a minimum of two months down time for LHC operation. For the same fault, not uncommon in a normally conducting machine, the repair time would be a matter of days.
Further details will be made available as soon as they are known.

The latest:
LHC re-start scheduled for 2009
The time necessary for the investigation and repairs precludes a restart before CERN’s obligatory winter maintenance period, bringing the date for restart of the accelerator complex to early spring 2009. LHC beams will then follow.

Could someone explain the need for the "obligatory winter maintenance period"? They were up and running (minimally) for what, a few weeks at most?

Power Requirements
Off the top of my head it seems that power costs more there during the winter and they use a rather significant amount of it. I might guess that supply is an issue too.
(This is one of those "I read it somewhere" things )

They were up and running for 9 days. Then they had this big problem that would cost them a couple months of time. My understanding about the obligatory winter shutdown is the same as Ned's; has something to do with how expensive power is over there in the winter.

Any News?
Anyone have any inside knowledge on what is happening at CERN? Are things soon to be back up and running?

LOL, that's pretty funny. Actually not if it really happened!
Shh, don't tell the doomsdayers!

Re: Any News?
I have no inside knowledge, but the current schedule for resumption is July sometime.
The accident that required part of the collider to be warmed up highlighted a design flaw that is duplicated in other places in the collider. For a while they contemplated keeping the collider shut down for the rest of 2009, but in the end they decided they could effect upgrades in the rest of collider incrementally over several years.
Pretty disappointing overall.

Dr. Walter L. Wagner on Coast to Coast AM with radio host George Noory discusses the potential discussion of our planet earth by creating micro black holes and stangelets with the LHC. He indicates the current CERN safety reports are seriously flawed and contain unacceptable risks. For example, if micro black holes are created, which CERN estimates about 1 micro black hole every sencond, Dr. Rossler's calculations estimate 50 months to 50 years to grow large enough to destroy Earth.
Any "scientist" who proposes pseudoscientific claims on Coast to Coast AM radio should have his Doctorate automatically rescinded.
BTW, "Dr." Wagner is not a physicist as shown by his affidavit in court:
I, Walter L. Wagner, affirm state and declare, under penalty of perjury of the laws of the State of Hawaii, as follows:
1. I am a nuclear physicist with extensive training in the field. I obtained my undergraduate degree in 1972 at Berkeley, California in the biological sciences with a physics minor, and graduate degree in 1978 in Sacramento, California in law.
He is also as much a doctor as Ken Hovind. Here is a site that utterly and thouroughly debunks this idiot and shows his true credentials: Summary of the Debunking of a Crank
What a fucking joke.
BTW, yes, I am being a "bigot" here. I have an extremely low tollerance for blatant idiocy and outright lying.
