So I had to look up how we do it: When a Birth Certificate Can Prove British Citizenship 1. Born in the UK Before 1 January 1983: • If you were born in the UK before this date, you are automatically considered a British citizen, regardless of your parents’ citizenship. A birth certificate showing your birth in the UK is sufficient proof. 2. Born in the UK After 1 January 1983: • You are automatically a British citizen if at least one of your parents was a British citizen or settled in the UK (held indefinite leave to remain or permanent residence) at the time of your birth. • A birth certificate alone does not confirm this; you may also need to provide proof of your parent(s)’ status at the time of your birth.
