Re: Trump Has a Mandate
Important to remember that he has a mandate among those who voted.
He does not represent or have the support of a majority of Americans.
Something like 40% of eligible voters didn't show up at all.
America is not dead yet. But we do desperately need candidates who aren't perceived as the lesser of two evils.

Re: The Green New Deal
Around 30% of greenhouse gas contributions come from power plants. They have to be replaced with wind and solar, and also nuclear if they ever succeed in designing a new generation of nuclear power plants that remove the possibility of meltdown and whose spent fuel can be easily and safely disposed of.
The Biden administration recently expressed support for next-gen nuclear...and in a rare case of the broken clock being right twice a day, Trump has apparently expressed support for nuclear as well (we'll see if he follows through at all).
Solar and wind have gotten so cheap that the government is no longer needed to continue propelling their adoption (though government fuckery could make them more expensive, such as with tariffs). It's cheaper to buy solar power than oil or gas. now. We've hit one of the rare positive tipping points.

It was too optimistic.

Re: THE ENCOURAGING EMERGING POLITICAL PARADIGM (vive le 47 admin)
The Reids/Behars/Hannitys/Maddows/Scarboroughs/et.al. have become boring and unenlightening. You know exactly the position they will take on any issue, they simply megaphone their side’s talking points, they offer nothing new. Their formula is aggravated inflammatory diatribe in telling the audience what to think and demonizing those who disagree. They are losing influence and their ratings show it.
I'm actually going to agree with you here. American corporate media has failed at journalism.
New information outlets – the likes of Joe Rogan, Russell Brand, Theo Von, and even Bill Maher, Tucker Carlson (yes, T.C.), Chris Como and others – have shot to the forefront. Their format is characterized by extended question-answer discussions with timely guests. They don’t spend a lot of time offering their own opinions, they are interested in getting to the bottom of things. This is what journalists used to do, once upon a time.
...and that didn't take long. This list of content creators is full of hatemongers and imbeciles. They're grifters and little more. They also fail at journalism - they are not a good or reliable source for news. They're actually the same as the "aggravated inflammatory diatribe" but degenerated with even less accuracy or journalistic ethics. "Just asking questions" is a well known manipulation tactic - you invite a guest with a known position, and just "ask questions" so that it doesnt seem that you have that position at all - you're just asking questions to the expert! It even works without a guest - just "ask questions" that have readily available answers but will trigger the desired line of thinking in the viewership who, on average, wont actually look up any information.
This is media for suckers and fools, Rose.
The new Trump Administration promises to accelerate this new paradigm, not just in the podcast etc. formats, but from the Administration itself. Indeed, Trump himself has much to do with this.
Yes, the rise in influence from grifters, the insane, and fascists is specifically what has the rest of us concerned and bewildered.
His habit of saying “outrageous” things (Can/Mex borders, Guatemala, Greenland, !!tariffs,….) sparks many questions and lots of discussion that he’s more than willing to engage in, and as the discussion evolves it more often than not becomes evident that Trump has a point, that maybe he’s not the most monstrous man in history after all.
He's America's Mussolini. He's a fascist and an idiot, and his only loyalty is to himself. His goals are to increase his wealth and gain acceptance among the social elites who have always shunned him. Money and ego and retribution are all that matters to him.
You really think that a billionaire like Trump, who demonstrably lies multiple times in any average single sentence, wants to help you?
This is just like those "get rich quick" books and conferences. The author/host doesnt really have any reliable/functional way to become wealthy. The real "get rich quick" method is to get a bunch of rubes to pay $50 for a book or $500 to attend an event.
You're one of the rubes, Rose. You don't have to be, you can change your mind any time, you don't have to keep feeding the parasites.

Unambiguous nazi sieg heil salutes by Elon Musk at Donald Trumps inauguration.
And there was applause.

Re: Trump's Inauguration Day
In other news, during a speech Musk apparently became overenthusiastic in expressing his appreciation to the crowd and accidentally (I assume) gave what looked like a Nazi solute. Twice. It received applause both times.
Dont sane-wash this. I posted the video a few posts above.
It was a nazi salute. It was not an "accident." Nobody gets "overenthusiastic" and throws a sieg heil.

Perhaps you should watch the actual videos and not cherry-picked screengrabs, Rose the Nazi Apologist.
This is memeing around the conservative corners of the internet. Raising ones hand is not the nazi salute, not by itself. You can be waving, you can be gesturing to an area or a group, etc.
EDIT:
Here's context in video of what Harris actually did. Not a sieg heil. You are gaslighting.
The sieg heil involves hand to heart, then a thrust outward to the side with a straight arm and hand.
The gesture that Musk performed. Twice, to make sure it wasnt possibly an accident.
This is *not* what happened in those other cherry-picked screengrabs.
It's not a hoax, and there was no media hypocracy here. If anything the media has been too *forgiving* of Musk's gesture.
Note that Musk's maternal grandparents were literally members of the Nazi party in Canada.
Another edit:
Somone on Reddit was kind enough to make a compilation video of the context around the gaslighting, cherry-picked image that purports Obama, Harris and Clinton to have performed the nazi salute.
Surprise: they did not. They clearly did not.
There's also a side-by-side of a bunch of neo-nazis doing the salute, next to Musk...who also definitely did a nazi salute.
Blocked
The link renders as "Blocked" but still leads to the video in question.

Re: Trump's Inauguration Day
Return to office mandates have been proven by multiple studies to reduce the productivity of workers. Its counterproductive.
They're typically not based around any actual productivity motivations, though corporate "leaders" will spout meaningless nonsense about "collaboration" and "creativity." A massive number of office workers would only come into the office to wind up on remote meetings with their colleagues from their desk, rather than their homes. And this causes increased pollution and expenditures.
The real reasons are typically to either justify their office real estate or, more frequently, a stealth-layoff. The United States has laws that trigger when you lay off a certain number of workers. This is costly to the company. But RTO mandates cause large numbers of employees to just quit - evading the costs associated with a layoff. Considering that the Trump admin wants to fire established career Federal workers, I think this is the likely true motivation.
TikTok presents as much a national security risk as other social media - it harvests a ton of data (likely less than Google or Meta have on you), and changes to the algorithm can suppress or advance specific topics and ideas. This is dangerous for anyone not in the driver's seat, but it's not unique to TikTok. There are some legitimate concerns about how powerful that data collection is, especially with regard to government and military installations - which is why the app (along with others) has been banned on those sites for a very long time.
If the US government really had the intent to resolve the security issues, they would implement laws regarding the ownership of data, protecting individuals' rights to privacy and control of their data; who gets it, how long it can be retained, when it can be deleted. And they would similarly legislate that the algorithms be made partially-open - not enough to reveal industry secrets, but enough to show what they're suppressing, what they're amplifying, and expose any potential manipulation, with an audit mechanism for both the algorithm and the data. This should be applied to all social media, not just "social media owned by an adversary nation."
Trump hated TikTok in 2020 because he perceived that the youth voters were using TikTok to spread information and rally up votes, generally not for him.
The Dems and Republicans hated TikTok after 2023, because of pro-Palestinian sentiment. TikTok was a way for a huge number of people to see the realities of what has been happening in Gaza, and it turned a lot of people against the American establishment regardless of party - because we have been complicit in evil, and TikTok was how many people found out about that.
It's been a targeted issue from the start, an attempt to suppress free speech and ensure the continuity of the establishment, and to suppress anti-Israel (which is notably and very importantly very different from antisemitism) sentiment.

Re: Trump Declares all Americans to be Female
I'm excited for a reporter to refer to her as "Madame President."
And for those who feel offended by being called female...
Does it feel shitty to feel like a man, have lived as a man for years, but to have the government unilaterally (and ignorantly) declare that you are a woman?
Do you feel like a man on the inside, but external forces like the government keep referring to you as a woman?
Do you perhaps wish that you could...somehow...transition back to being a man?
I mean, according to the government, your sex and gender are determined not by your chromosomes or by your gender expression or your internal identity, but by your sex at conception. It sucks for you if that feels wrong, because facts don't care about your feelings.
God, that felt shitty to even say. Perhaps this is a moment where some people could learn a sliver of empathy toward those who are transgender. I wont hold my breath, but it's an opportunity, at least.

Re: Lemme just try posting this...
The ADL did say...something.
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/jan/20/trump-elon-musk-salute writes:
In a statement posted to social media later on Monday, the ADL said: “This is a delicate moment. It’s a new day and yet so many are on edge. Our politics are inflamed, and social media only adds to the anxiety.
“It seems that Elon Musk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge. In this moment, all sides should give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath. This is a new beginning. Let’s hope for healing and work toward unity in the months and years ahead.”
AOC's response echoes my own thoughts:
“Just to be clear, you are defending a Heil Hitler salute that was performed and repeated for emphasis and clarity. People can officially stop listening to you as any sort of reputable source of information now. You work for them. Thank you for making that crystal clear to all.”

Re: Third Term Constitutional Amendment Introduced in Congress
They changed the language to exclude Obama.
It limits those who have previously served consecutive terms.
That blocks Obama v3, but allows Trump v3.
The amendment that has no chance of ratification:
″No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms,”

Re: No surprise
Its likely that "higher up" doesnt care about these specifics.
The suffering is the point.

@Phat
You've mentioned a lot of financial conspiracy theories. You've, in the past, been concerned about BRICS.
Our current administration is pushing every trade partner and ally away from the United States as hard as humanly possible.

Re: What have we wrought?
Not "attempting" to reverse world leadership.
We have damaged international relationships in Europe and with our closest partners in Canada and Mexico so badly in just 30 days that it will take generations, plural, to recover.
Trust takes a long time to earn and moments to betray. Trump has been speedrunning betrayal after betrayal of every important agreement alliance and other relationship he can think of.
We Americans are going to find out in the coming months and years exactly how much of our quality of life came from those relationships and American leadership.
And this is only the beginning. Trump is outright referring to himself as a king. At CPAC there was a serious movement to give Trump a 3rd term. The Federal government is being disassembled with a wrecking ball, so quickly the keep "accidentally" firing critical workers. The lawsuits around these actually illegal firings will take years and cost more than the salaries of those terminated. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are about to see major consequences as Musk and his team of Shitler Youth "investigate" and find "fraud" simply because they're all imbeciles who don't understand the data they're looking at, don't care about the responsibility needed to handle that data, and see virtually every expenditure as a waste that could have been a tax break for Botched-Penis-Enlargement-Elon-Musk (I dont care if the rumor is true, it should circulate).
It's possible that Congress will finally act and impeach him. If it happens, it's going to be after all of this and more is already done.
Call your representatives, senators, even state and local officials. Party affiliation doesnt matter - even Republicans should be against all of this, if they're not directly part of the MAGA cult. The opportunists can be swayed as soon as they think it's safer to jump ship. Call them as often as you can. Call the capitol switchboard and ask to speak to your rep, not only their local office in your state. Tell them what you want them to do, tell them how upset/angry/terrified you are.
