So we are almost into summer, just about a week from now. And so far this year we have already had 35 (including today) 100F+ days. Now, at 3:33pm it's at 101 with 40% humidity; a Heat Index over 111. Lots of rain and flooding a couple hundred miles north and every two weeks or so we've had some evening thunderstorm, but nothing really here at the house.
That's probably because the city installed new monster size storm drains. In fact most of last winter I had a Big Cat prowling up and down our street.

We had a couple of 90 degree days here in the Chicago suburbs. But it is cooling off this evening, so I should get a better sleep tonight.
Your "Big Cat" link doesn't work for me -- probably a permissions problem.

NW WI cool and wet spring
Up in NW WI, we have been cool and wet. Raining almost every day. We had over 4 inches of rain in May and already have 4 inches of rain for June. We have hit 80F only three times this year. Today we may hit 75F but started out this morning at 45F. Then the rains start again. Forecasts are showing rain for as far out as they see. Might hit 80F tomorrow but rain all day, all night and all day Monday.
Tired of rain.

Re: NW WI cool and wet spring
We may get a week or so of rain next week depending on the development of a tropical low in the lower Gulf of Mexico. But it's still a 50/50 proposition while any development will likely increase the flooding on the northern gulf coast those systems tend to pass us by.

Just got our first tropical storm flooding warning for this season. We've been lucky so far unlike parts of Gulf Coastal Texas a few hundred miles north in South Texas and even now were are projected to get anywhere from 2" to 5" less rain from this coming system then the Houston/Galveston/Corpus Christi areas. This will be the first real test for the enhanced storm sewer drains installed last winter.

We're supposed to hit 96 today (I'm playing tennis at 11), but nothing extreme is really going on here, even though the newspaper headlines are full of reports of the northeast getting hit with heat waves and record temperatures (Searing heat wave drives record temperatures across eastern U.S.).
I know some parts of the country are getting hit with truly extreme weather, but the northeast isn't really one of them. We always have a week or two during the summer when the temperature hits the 90's. This isn't unusual. Tomorrow and Saturday the highs are supposed to be 83 and 77, so the heat wave's already over.
The exaggerated headlines about the northeast happen in the winter too. We get up, read about how the northeast has been blasted by a nor'easter that has closed roads, brought everything to a standstill, and cut off the power to hundreds of thousands of customers, then we get in our cars, drive off, and go about our business on the well plowed roads, maybe going to work or doing some shopping.
One lesson you learn here is to not go grocery shopping the day after a blizzard, because the day before the blizzard the grocery stores were cleaned out by panic driven people who give way too much credence to a weather service that for some reason is just crying for attention. Their credo seems to be, "Never give a weather forecast that isn't guaranteed to be worse than what will actually happen."
Sorry, this turned into a complaint about weather forecasting and weather reporting. Again, I do understand that some parts of the country are getting hit by truly extreme weather.

Too early to make statements like this. July and August are historically the hottest months of the year. This heat wave is earlier and hotter than typical. I think it does warrant news coverage.

Made it through the heaviest stuff and the Tornado Warning but round two is building up for a second pass next week. The storm drains do work and there has been zero accumulation so far.
And we really really really need the rain. If we get a week or two of drizzle type rain we will be in much better shape.

We have had nothing but rain. It rains every day. We have had just under 6" so far in June. In May we had 4". We live in clay country too, so my 20 acres have about an inch of standing water. Normally this time of year I would be hauling in trees I cut over the winter. If it doesn't dry I may have to buy firewood this year.
I have a Tempest weather station and I get accurate readings.

Theodoric writes in Message 11:

I *was* talking about the northeast. If you check the weather history for the region you'll see that our summers have not become hotter and hotter like other regions of the country. We do seem to be getting more rain. Climate change affects different regions differently, and New England has been projected to become cooler and wetter.
My criticism is directed at weather forecasting and reporting in our region. The current climate change political environment seems to encourage exaggerated forecasting and reporting that are not accurate reflections of what is actually happening here.
I have no idea what the weather will be like this July and August, but most likely it will be fairly similar to past years. Meanwhile, those news reports you're seeing now about how horribly hot it is up here? Ignore them. 96 two days in a row is not a heat wave.
I'm leaving for tennis now. It's currently 86°F. It'll be around a hundred on court. No problem.

I understand you are talking about the northeast. I was too. I grew up in the northeast, Northshore of MA and Scranton, PA. The reporting is accurate. Maine and much of the region are hitting record temps. Yes, it will cool off for the weekend, but we are only in the third week of June.
Here in NW WI we are extremely wet and cool. Should this not be reported?
Record temps are newsworthy. As is record rainfall or record cold. Poo pooing extreme weather is just head in the sand reactionary thinking.
