Re: A great BSer
I made fun of it saying "wow". That just seems so unbot-like.

Do you mean whether or not ChatGPT is capable of responding to each individual poster almost like mirroring their own character traits?

At last! A voice of unbiased reason at EvC! That jury is still out too, unless you can program some empathy into it.

Re: ChatGPT Issues
So is your ChatGPT preprogrammed? Do you program it? Or do all of us add to its "personality"?

DeepSeek R1 Tanks Nvidia
I saw this on the BBC and wanted to hear your comments about it.
China's DeepSeek AI shakes industry and dents America's swagger
Apparently, DeepSeek was developed at a fraction of the cost of ChatGPT and, though using lower-quality software, impressed enough people to shake the market.
quote:
The US seemed to think its abundant data centers and control over the highest-end chips gave it a commanding lead in AI, despite China's dominance in rare-earth metals and engineering talent(...)Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen may have said it best. "DeepSeek-R1 is AI's Sputnik moment," he posted to X on Sunday, referring to the satellite that kicked off the space race.
As a software developer yourself, what challenges do you see for Western contributions to this "competition" that will undoubtedly shape our future?
I also was curious if you might play around with the competing chatbot and see if it has any quirks that the mainstream media may have missed. Im kinda curious myself.

Caveat: I am not a software expert...
Taq writes:
DeepSeek was trained by all of the massive AIs that cost so much. If those big, expensive AIs didn't exist then neither would DeepSeek. DeepSeek is essentially the student and the big AIs are its teachers. This also means DeepSeek isn't as accurate as those other AIs, not to mention all of the issues that will be inherited by DeepSeek. It is a perfect example of the overall Chinese industrial strategy which is to copy intellectual property from the west and make stuff with it.
I understand and am aware of that. Thanks for bringing it up. China's strategy remains similar to how it has always been, with one difference being that they do have (most of) the rare earth minerals. Hard assets and commodities are everything. Rare earth minerals become priceless as rarity increases.
BBC writes:
It's not quite as good – but for most people, that won't matter.
It may be the case it has managed to cut costs and compute, but we do know that it is built at least in part on the shoulders of the giants: it uses Nvidia chips – albeit older, cheaper versions - and utilises Meta's open-source Llama architecture, as well as AliBaba's equivalent Qwen.
"I think this absolutely challenges the idea of monetization strategies that a lot of leading US AI firms have had," said Ms Blomquist.
The application of AI interaction with human reasoning is the issue that I wish to address.
Human indoctrination can be done cheaply and effectively...Tik Tok showed us that.
But I'm drifting a bit off topic.

Re: ChatGPT is Back!
ChatGPT writes:
One reason for this could be the nature of training data and the model’s approach to language, which focuses on patterns rather than understanding.
Patterns I can appreciate. Humans undoubtedly use them in a myriad number of expressions. Understanding is a bit more challenging. Is understanding synonymous with comprehension?
Belief?
Or is understanding limited to data and evidence?
