Concerning my favorite Pope, yes I liked John Paul II. I could sense the Holy Spirit in him. Personally, I don't sense this Spirit in all popes, or all priests or all Pastors. Very few have it (The Spirit). I sense it in a few people here at EvC though not all of them.
And of course, the critics will argue that 1) They don't sense "it" in me 2) Why wouldn't God simply give his Spirit to everyone rather than picking and choosing?
