That obviously can’t be right as written. Sounds like you’re counting Kansas and other Midwestern States as being East of Kansas which doesn’t make sense. There should be a substantial chunk of population that aren’t East or West of Kansas (such as those actually living IN Kansas).
(From my reading about 24% of US Population is West of Kansas, with 12% in California)
