When I started at EvC, I didn't have an avatar. Eventually, I developed a short and quick response style. Somebody may have called me a "gunslinger" - you'd have to go back through 20,000 posts to find out who. In any case, I adopted Lee Van Cleef (in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) as my first avatar. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, we had a member whom I will not name, who has not been active lately, who is gay. One Valentine's Day, she suggested (as I recall) that we should be ambiguous about our partners' gender to avoid the appearance that only different-gender relationships are legitimate. Misusing the instructions, as is my wont, I decided to become gender-ambigous. Hence, one of the few female gunslingers I could think of. (Raquel Welch in Hannie Caulder is another possibility.) I have occasionally switched to Sean Connery as Marko Ramius, the Vilnius Schoolmaster, in The Hunt for Red October, which I claim looks more like me in real life (but nobody believes me) - but people seem to prefer Sharon Stone. Consider yourself boggled.

In other words, you can't answer my question: Why do you need to believe that all life shares a common ancestor to examine and compare the DNA of humans and other animals? That doesn't surprise me.

In studying life, especially down at the genetic level, the concept of UCD became clearly evident. We don't need belief. We have the facts in evidence.
