Farewell Robin
I would like to commemorate Robin in a poem.

---

Please, atheist, a moment stay,
and believer, if you want to, pray,
and ponder your mortality.

Raise your glass to RobinRohan,
who we know did not condone
the idea of absolute morality.

Glean from his posts combined,
that his fondest feature of the mind
was its incorporeality.

Whether sober or profoundly pissed,
know that Robin will be sorely missed
for his play and his congeniality.

---

I will not forget him.

We corresponded privately about a poem we both love. I'll put it here:

You, Andrew Marvell
by Archibald MacLeish

And here face down beneath the sun
And here upon earth's noonward height
To feel the always coming on
The always rising of the night:

To feel creep up the curving east
The earthy chill of dusk and slow
Upon those under lands the vast
And ever climbing shadow grow

And strange at Ecbatan the trees
Take leaf by leaf the evening strange
The flooding dark about their knees
The mountains over Persia change

And now at Kermanshah the gate
Dark empty and the withered grass
And through the twilight now the late
Few travelers in the westward pass

And Baghdad darken and the bridge
Across the silent river gone
And through Arabia the edge
Of evening widen and steal on

And deepen on Palmyra's street
The wheel rut in the ruined stone
And Lebanon fade out and Crete
High through the clouds and overblown

And over Sicily the air
Still flashing with the landward gulls
And loom and slowly disappear
The sails above the shadowy hulls

And Spain go under and the shore
Of Africa the gilded sand
And evening vanish and no more
The low pale light across that land

Nor now the long light on the sea:
And here face downward in the sun
To feel how swift, how secretly
The shadow of the night comes on

And you, RobinRohan...

We understood each other instinctively when we met on this featureless plain that he called nihilism.

Here's to you, Robin--I hope you were in Heaven a half hour before the Devil knew you were dead.

what happens when you go, Percy?

Percy may be all powerful on this board, but I'm not sure even he can answer that one...

may Robin will see fit to post from the other side..

I should be surprised that I feel as sad as I do. I can't say I miss him, nor that I knew him particularily well. Yet sad enough to cry because I am sad. And I just wonder where he is now.

I am sad to hear of Robin's passing, and while I knew him only through this site, will miss his unique perspective.

I wish his family and friends the best in this dificult time.

... but I'm going to have a drink.

and read a play or a poem.

cheers robin.

very inappropriate

I pondered before posting and supposed that no matter where Robin is or what state of existence, if it is a concious state, my message to his friends left behind on his behalf would be accepted, yea even appeciated, by him.

I agree. Robin was such a man as to plead with Lazarus. Oh bugger...

keeping track of people
makes you wonder how the rest here will know if or when someone has died? I'd hate to be told about to others with "he just doesn't post here anymore".

I'm glad I had some place I could call to check on Robin. I guess it's a matter of whether you want others to check on you or not. I gave Robin some family email addresses in case I stopped responding to his emails. Most of the time on the internet it doesn't really matter. You stop posting and nobody notices or if they do they don't care much.

I'm also very glad I started this thread because Robin was well liked here and will be missed.

I am very sorry to hear about Robin's death. Even though we have "exchanged words" in the past, I am still saddened by this; "any man's death diminishes me" as John Donne wrote.

My sincere condolences to Robin's family, friends, and students; I wish them the strength to bear with this sad event.

Edited to add:

Thanks, Faith, for posting this news. As sad as it is, it is nice to know the reason a member of this board has ceased posting.

the red bar
someone wrote earlier about robin's ability to get a topic into the red zone. well, he's done it again, with this one. His last hurrah, if you will.

Rest In Peace Robin
I remembered a poem that I had once used here as my sig and I felt it might well express something of what I feel today. I hope to remember it when my time comes.

What delightful hosts they are-Love and Laughter!
Lingeringly I turn away at this late hour, yet glad
They have not withheld from me their high hospitality.
So at the door I pause to press their hands once more
And say,"So fine a time!Thank you both...and goodbye.

I think it would be fine to have a memorial forum, but as many have said, it's probably very unusual that a poster's death would be recognized.
