My eggs Are Hatching!!!
WooHoo! The dragonfly eggs I have been observing since last September have started hatching, on day 203 since being oviposited.
This is the 6th species in this group of closely related species that I have reared, and documented the embryo development. Watching these tiny 3mm long nymphs behavior and morphology and noting differences between these species at these earliest stages of life is fascinating, to me.
As far as I know, no one else has ever observed or documented these stages of the lives of these species.
I'm getting video too!

My Imaging Computer Died Yesterday
Well, this sucks!
All I really need is a new motherboard and processor and RAM. The case and power supply and hard drives are fine, so I will not lose any data and the replacement cost will only be about $1800, but I hate losing the time it's going to take to get the parts and put it back together and install all the software.
I have had a series of issues ever since I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10...FUCK Windows 10. I sure hope Windows 11 will be better!!

Re: My Imaging Computer Died Yesterday
I just discovered a fix for the major problems I had with Win 10, so I will be able to avoid it on the new Win 11 machine.
I had 5 hard drives installed in the computer and with a power switch panel on the front so I could power up or down the hard drives I wanted to use. This was so drives I was not using didn't need to have wear when I I did not need them.
I always cold swapped them, turning them off before booting up, but in Win 10 there is a feature called fast boot that creates a hibernation file that makes the computer crash if a drive that was powered up when you shut down is not still powered up when you boot back up. Windows 7 didn't have this feature. I now know how to turn fast boot off. Yay!
My new parts should be here Wednesday.

Re: My Imaging Computer Died Yesterday
I'm already using SSDs for the system drive and a scratch drive and that did speed up a lot of things. The new motherboard, processor and RAM are going to be a lot higher speed too and are all built for over-clocking.

Re: My Imaging Computer Died Yesterday
I used to get all excited about MBs, drives , video cards. But since I became a kept man 20 years ago I have bought pre-made. I loved building systems. The last 5-6 I built were for cost for friends. It is amazing how much things have changed in the last 20 years. Now all I have is a MS Surface 7 and that is more than enough.

Re: My Imaging Computer Died Yesterday
But since I became a kept man 20 years ago I have bought pre-made.
In the late 90's I took our junior college's series of UNIX courses, which of course included networking and TCP/IP. A fellow student was divorced. In his house he had set up a local network of servers. Because he could, which was because he didn't have to break everything back down and stow it all the time and then have to pull it out and set it up again for an hour or two of use.
Which is how most would have to do it to keep a wife happy. For example, in one house the only space I had to do any work in was about one square foot of the corner of a table. Instead, I had to use the dining table to work at, but put everything away for meals. At least when I got a home computer I could set it up permanently at its own table.

Re: My Imaging Computer Died Yesterday
My partner in the computer biz blames me for it failing. Once I hooked up with a younger medical student, I lost interest in the business. I guess that was part of it, but his wife spending all of our profits had more to do with it.

Re: My Imaging Computer Died Yesterday
I can't deny I'm looking forward to seeing how much faster this will be than the old version. I have bench marks for how long it takes to convert 100 images from raw to tif and how long it takes to run those images through my stacking program and several other operation. I usually leave the system cranking through those operations overnight because they suck up all the resources so I can't do anything else while they are running.
I've built a lot of systems for friends and relatives and for imaging systems at work. I showed my son-in-law how to build his 1st PC and he and I helped my grandson build his 1st high-end gaming system when he was about 10.

I used to build PCs and maintain a lot of my neighbours for fun. But constant updating of software and having to buy new Operating Systems that just got worse and worse just became tedious. I was never out of my neighbour's houses fiddling with something.
I'm an Apple user now - long story. There's not much you can touch as an Apple user which was something I resented and stopped me using Apple for 20 years. But I have to say, they're brilliant machines. I hardly touch them and they just carry on working.
I'd recommend you look at the high-end Macs. But I guess you'd miss the fun. They do turn you into a user rather than a mechanic.

During the great lockdown I killed time by building a bunch of computers that then went to kids without access to one. They were a mixture of operating systems between windows and various linux flavors and oriented towards different age groups. I never really kept track of the number but it was something that kept me occupied and a whole bunch cheaper than golf or sailing or sports cars.

Linux!!!
i like my linux box. it has a sane array of tools to grep and sort and cut.
Windoze 10, which i use way more than linux, is a stupid interface and from what I've heard, mackintoshes are just huge comfort bandaids over the engines so you don't have to worry about a thing. they both take the user away from computers so they don't have to think.
to Mr. Bill Gates: WHY THE FUCK did you choose to preserve the old ancient teletype line ending, Cr-Cr-Lf ?????
that makes us have to text edit or use unix2dos programs?
and don't get me started on word processors! plain text is fine.
