Try counting to 24,000 ... you won't be able to do it. I tried it and only got to 12 - and I'm a good counter.

It is an excuse for intellectual laziness. If your viewpoint has merits and facts to back it up why would you have to lie?

It's not irrelevant. How did scientists assess the age of the ice to be 24,000 years if somewhere along the line they didn't count to 24,000?

If I measure the circumference of a watermelon I don't have to do any counting at all ... I simply read what the tape says where one part of the tape meets the other.

And who was it who counted out and labeled every single meter tick mark on that 40 million meter tape measure? Not to mention marking off all the centimeter tick marks in each and every one of those 40 million meters. Plus labelling some, if not all, of those centimeters.
Somebody had to have done that! But Sludge's problem is that he cannot imagine anybody being able to count big numbers since that is far beyond his own personal abilities, which are not much better than a Kindergartner just starting to learn to count: "One ... two ... {very strained look on Sludge's face due to severe mental constipation} ... ... many!"

What a beautiful machine. And we are seeing things that were invisible to us before JWST, in distance, and wavelength and intrinsic faintness. And spectroscopy up the yingyang. Piles and piles of new observations to explain, but also to add to what we already know about the Universe. (rubbing hands together mentally). This is getting really exciting! Astronomy and astrophysics golden age is here and I'm pleased to be alive to see big answers, but some new bigger questions! Science nerds built that fucker!
