I wonder if he'd leave his kid in a closed car on a sunny day, then demand a coherent thermodyamic definition from the police. Or maybe he needs a coherent thermodynamic definition before he kicks off the blanket on a steamy night?
Then again, I'm no NoNukes.

Thank your lucky stars that you aren't NoNukes.
Nope. I see your tag on a post as a seal of quality.
But I had to poke his pout, and I couldn't resist the chance to say "no NoNukes".

Re: Funny Weather We're Having
Also, excellent summary of 2015's weather anomalies here.
quote:
James Morison, the principal investigator of the North Pole Environmental Observatory, said he’s never heard of temperatures above freezing in the wintertime there. Looking closer at the weather data, it appears this event is in fact unprecedented during the time period from late December through late April.
On Wednesday, the North Pole will be warmer than Western Texas, Southern California, and parts of the Sahara.
quote:
A weather forecast for Wednesday morning shows a rare midwinter warm front over the North Pole, with temperatures a few degrees above freezingabout 50 or 60 degrees warmer than normal for late December.
I fear we live in interesting times. It must suck to be young.

Or maybe I am wrong. Can someone make the case that this isn't a bad argument?
If it happens often enough, especially trending over an extended period of time, it's no longer weather, it's climate.

I think we're toast because it seems like a huge segment of the global population want civilization to fail. I can really only think of 2 reasons for their desires.
1). Religious fervor.
2). If civilization fails, so do the restraints of civilized behavior imposed by society.
They are much the same thing. There is nothing like religion to whip people into a frenzy in which they can discard their religion's moral teachings in order to serve it better -- doing what god would do if he were in possession of all the facts.
We see a similar bad faith mechanism at play with conspiracists. I doubt many people genuinely believe, per the Q-ninnies, that Hillary Clinton slices faces from children so that she can dance naked wearing the bloody mask at satanic revels. Or that high ranking Democrats participate in an affiliated global pedophile ring.
But, like method acting, once you focus on feeling the outrage, you gain tremendous energy and license. What acts cannot be justified in the name of that poor child? Who wouldn't righteously overturn a fairly run election in order to stop the homosexual recruitment of children? Devils and demons can't cast valid votes!
To recast Augustine: Hate, and do what you will.
So the only GOP platform is accusation. So everything is allowed.
The truly massive tragedy on the southern border will arrive with an outpouring of climate refugees. Almost certainly we will slaughter them -- pointlessly, since the fire will follow hard on their heels.
I lean on a hard hope: that our means of global climate disruption collapse before the planet becomes inimical to all life. As I near my own end, like Rutger Hauer in Bladerunner, I love life more than my own instance of it -- or my kind.
May our civilization fail in time.

Re: Texas Toast
Power is back on! Let the carbon times roll!
I had hope when I helped organize the first Earth Day activities in high school, more than 50 years ago, and for a long time after ... speaking out, organizing, protesting, donating, voting ...
If April is the cruelest month, hope is its cruelest flower. If only we could persuade the evangelicals that carbon is the devil's tool. But they cannot even stop adoring the Orange Ass.
I've been reading what we know about the prior great extinctions. When I walk about and enjoy the avian magic, I consider that we both emerged through such bottlenecks -- and we're killing them all.
Of all the members of the predator guild in ice age Europe, only us and the wolf (and the wolf-dog) survived. Now we slaughter the few remaining wolves, and our dogs are useless bits of yipping fluff.
It's not impossible that we might dramatically change course, but there's no evidence of the ability or the will.
So I can't call my occasional bouts of magical thinking hope. Maybe the UFOs that the DoD says sometimes shut down the electronics in nuclear installations will save us. Maybe Gandalf.

Yes, this is an example of the proliferating Artificial Rightwing Stupidity Engine (ARSE).
I considered direct replies. But just because the ARSE shat on my den floor doesn't mean I have to paddle my fingers in it.
Marc, K.Rose, and now ChemEngineer are simply flooding the zone with their ARSE product. It is a black hole. Replies, whether outraged or reasoned, are fuel that makes the ARSE run hotter.
The ARSE is a tactical asset. While we debate whether they are fools or knaves, their allies pack the judge-shopped 5th Court of Appeals to SCOTUS pipeline to refine their fascist blueprint -- if their suit passes muster with a majority of SCOTUS justices, well and good; if not, SCOTUS Thomas can be relied on for helpful hints at more fully formed stools.
Sooner or later, perhaps on a krystal clear night, we will face this shit in the streets.
