I waited a day or so before responding to this, because there are surely people who know more biology than I do.
But your observation regarding the popular press matches what is commonly known. You really cannot learn science by reading the paper in the grocery checkout line. It's not going to be accurate, particularly when accuracy interferes with being sensational.
